Shooting:
Kimber Ultra CDP .45
Springfield Armory EMP 9mm
Distance:
7 yards
10 yards
Target 1:
For the first target at 7 yards I put three magazines through the gun, each filled with 9 rounds for a total of 27 holes. The gun shop beautifully. It was very easy on the hands, very comfortable to shoot and had a fabulous, light, trigger pull.
Target 2:
Still at 7 yards I decided to switch over to my .45 and see how well the two would compare under fire. As one could expect, the .45 had quite a bit more of a kick than the EMP,but it still shot well. I’m very happy with it’s performance. I put two magazines of 7 rounds and one magazine of eight, for a total of 22 rounds into this target.
Target 3:
I went out to 10 yards for this target with the EMP. I wanted to see how it shot at the greater distances. Needless to say it wasn’t the gun, it was the shooter. For some strange reason I had a very hard time concentrating on my front sights. I kept wanting to look at the target or look at my back sights even. Also, my left eye being open it wanted to look at everything. It was very distracting. Two magazines of 9 rounds for a total of 18 rounds in this target.
Target 4:
Not to be outdone by a 9mm, my .45 was up to the challenge to go to 10 yards and see what kind of damage it could do. As you can see, I actually shot better with the .45 at this distance than with the 9mm. I put one magazine of 7 and a second magazine of 8 for a total of 15 rounds in this target.
Target 5:
To end the shooting for the day I brought my target back in to 7 yards and shot only fifteen rounds through the EMP into the target.
It was a good finish to the day.
Final Assessment and After Thoughts:
As the 9mm is easier on the hands as far as recoil is concerned, I found it very pleasant to shoot. It is also very accurate and had no feeding problems, jams or any other negative performance issues. I would have no problem whatsoever adding this little gun to my armory or to my choices for carry guns.
One thing I did find to be interesting was the differences between the sights. I’m still adjusting to the sights on my CDP and as the EMP has standard three-dot sights, it was odd switching back and forth between one and the other. In fact, the flyers on Target 4 from the CDP were more from readjusting to the XS sights than poor shooting. Once I readjusted I was happily hitting exactly where I should have been.
If you compare the targets I think you will find, as I have, that I shot a little better with the .45 than I did with the 9mm. Some may find that strange but the targets don’t lie. Perhaps it’s just the fact that I’m more used to the .45 or maybe it’s something as simple as the new sights, but either way, I was shooting better with the CDP.
I, however, don’t think that my decreased performance with the EMP is any reflection on the gun itself.
While I certainly wouldn’t mind adding the EMP to my collection of 1911s and my carry options, for now, I’ll be sticking with my CDP, more out of financial resources than anything.
