This week we took “opening day” in our miniature garden a step further. Tiny ground covers are peeking through the dirt now, but we are always up for adding a quick dose of green. The fastest way to add green to your wee gardens is add a bit of moss.
If you are lucky enough to live in the middle of a forest, you probably have plenty of moss growing everywhere. The closest I’ve come to Moss Heaven was near the top of Rattlesnake Trail in upstate New York.
{Remember, forest preserves would rather you leave their moss to grow in peace.}
If you live in a city suburb like we do, you may need to find a few sources. We gathered this year’s moss online from Moss Acres. We ordered a moss starter kit, loaded with fern moss and a box of our absolute favorite, cushion moss. It arrived on our doorstep in two days, complete with planting instructions. Pretty simple, really.
In order to get a good foundation ready for the moss, we cleared the pebbles and stones out of the open areas and loosened the soil. We added the loose pebbles to our crushed slate paths, which always need a bit of freshening this time of year.
After giving the new moss a good rain shower, the boys enjoyed stepping all over it to help root it in. I usually encourage “tip-toeing through the tulips,” so this was a blast!
