2009 Ulster & NI Track &Field Indoor Championships, Odyssey Belfast

Superb performance with Nine medals for Annalee AC

All the efforts of those who battled through the snow and ice to get to Belfast were justly rewarded with fantastic performances from the athletes.

Lauren Sexton and Aoife Murphy gave the club a great start to Day 1 of the Indoor championships. Aoife jumped a competition pb of 1.46m to win the U15 High jump against stiff competition not only from Ulster athletes but also clubs from Scotland, Munster and Leinster. Not to be outdone, Lauren Sexton ran a huge pb of 9.79 seconds to win the 60m Hurdles with Aoife in second place. Annalee AC showed its depth in Hurdles with a 3rd competitor, Laura Young, also qualifying for the same final. Aoife completed a full set of medals by finishing in 3rd place in the Long Jump. Lauren Sexton also had a great day as she won a bronze in the high jump and was unlucky not to medal in the sprints. Well done, girls. Andrew Creamer and Darren Watters were both second in their respective Hurdle sprints. Orla Murphy won two bronze medal in shot putt and high jump with Ciara Murray just missing out on a high jump medal on countback. Ciara also got to the hurdles finals and had a long jump pb and Caoimhin O’Reilly qualified for the finals of the sprints. Breffni O’Brien had a good long jump. Diane Trenier was 5th in the shot putt. Conor Bates ran well and good performances also from Aisling Brady, Sarah McDonald, Yvette Schutten, Tadhg McGahern, Eleanor and Yvonne Brady. On Day 2, Andrew O’Brien’s 4th place in the 800m was the best result of the day. Other athletes on day 2 were Cian Duffy, Conor Sexton, Hannah McKenna and Darren Watters.  Results Odyssey Day 1- click here. Results Odyssey-Day 2--click here More photos posted later.

Ulster Indoor Track & Field Championships Day 2, March 14th 2009, Magherafelt.

Huge medal haul for Annalee AC athletes.

Annalee AC athletes showed yet again that they are part of one of the most successful clubs in Ulster with both older and younger athletes coming through to win at provincial level. There were 5 individual golds, 4 silvers and 6 bronze medals won as well as one relay team gold and 5 relay team bronzes. This can be added to th
e 9 individual medals won on Day 1 of the Championships--see report below this.
Aine Brady was a  double gold medallist with wins at the U12 Sprint and in the Long Jump. Aine had to win her final twice as the officials made the athletes rerun the race immediately after the first run! And as if heats and two finals wasn’t enough for a day, Aine then ran the 600m where she just missed out on a third individual medal with a 4th place finish. Cian O’Reilly won his 1500m but was just beaten into Silver place in the 800m with both first and second placed runners given the same time. Paul Sexton won Gold in the U13 Hurdles and was 3rd in the 60m sprint.

Ferdia
Donohue won the U1
8m Hudles and was 3rd in the long jump. Sean Og Lawlor won silver in both his long jump and high jump and was 3rd in the sprints in a blanket finish. Aodhagan Watters was 2nd in the Hurdles and 3rd in the long jump. Clodagh O’Reilly led the 600m race from the start but was just outsprinted in the final 100m and eventually finished 3rd. Clodagh also won a bronze medal in the high jump. Andrew O’Brien ran a fantastic 1500m to win his heat but was unlucky to be in the slower heat as the medals were awarded on times and Andrew finished 7th. Sarah Donohue was also unfortunate as she was impeded by an official in her lane and just missed out on qualifying despite a great run to try to catch up. Sarah just missed out on a medal in the hurdles as she clipped the last hurdle and finished 4th. Sarah Young was 4th in the High Jump.
Eadaoin O’Reilly ran well to finish in 4th place in the 1500m.

The relay races were held at the very end of the day with medals awarded on times. The tight track at Magherafelt again caused athletes a few problems with their way being impeded by other athletes. The 1995 girls were particularly unlucky. However there were still some great runs and the following teams won medals.

1994 girls Gold (Aoife Murphy, Yvette Schutten, Bronagh McBrena and Hannagh McKenna)

1997 Girls Bronze (Sarah Donohue, Sarah Young, Megan O’Reilly, Aine Brady, Hannagh McHugh-sub).

1997 Boys Bronze (Paul Sexton, Aodhagan Watters, John Nulty, Sean OgLawlor, Adrian Moore-sub)

1996 Boys Bronze (Caoimhin O’Reilly, Breifne O’Brien, Mathhew McKenna, Ciaran Schutten)

1995 Boys Bronze (Andrew Creamer, Conor Bates, Caoimhin O’Reilly, Andrew O’Brien)

1993 Girls Bronze (Aisling Bates, Hannagh McKenna,  BronaghMcBreen, Aoibheann Smith Lynch)

1992 Girls 4th (Megan Gilchreest, Rebecca O’Neill, Mairead Tierney, Aisling Bates)

1995 Girls 4th (Laura Young, Diane Trenier, Yvette Schutten , Lauren Sexton).

1996 Girls 5th (Ciara Murray, Aisling Brady, Sarah Donohue, Orla Murphy)

ALL IRELAND ATHLETICS TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS, NENAGH, 28TH -29TH MARCH, 2009

Gold Medal for Aine, Silver for Paul and all Annalee AC athletes claim top ten finishes.

Another excellent outing from Aine Brady produced a gold medal winning performance in the U12 Long Jump. Aine jumped 3.98m to win and claim her first All Ireland Championship. Aine also finished 6th in a blanket finish in the sprint final. Paul Sexton produced his best form and a pb to take silver medal in the U13 Hurdles
with a fantastic run of 10.06 seconds. Paul finished 11th in the sprints in a time of 8.99s.

Sean Og Lawlor was very unlucky to miss out on a medal in the U12 High Jump. Both he and the third placed jumper cleared 1.25m but the countback didn’t favour Sean and he finished in 4th. However, he had a fabulous championship as he also finished 5th in the Long jump with 3.97m and 8th in the sprints (9.02s), all pbs, which augurs well for a future in combined events.

Andrew Creamer also finished 4th in the Hurdles event. Andrew ran very well and was in third place over the final hurdle but was caught on the sprint in and finished 4th in a new pb of 9.62s. Lauren Sexton ran 10.16s  (pb) to finish 5th in a highly competitive 60m Hurdles and Lauren also jumped 1.35m which was good enough for 8th in the high jump. Ferdia Donoghue couldn’t shake off his foot injury but had a brave run and finished 5th in his hurdles final. Darren Watters had a poor start and just wasn’t able to do enough to catch the others in his Hurdles and finished 6th in 9.73s. Aoife Murphy was 7th in the High Jump with a jump of 1.35, 7th in the Hurdles in 10.27s (pb) and 13th in the long jump with 4.34m. Orla Murphy was 10th in the shot putt with 8.70m (pb) and Aodhagan Watters finished 10th in the long jump with 3.80m. Aodhagan was doing well in the hurdles until he hit a hurdle and that unfortunately ended his chances of qualifying. Well done to all of the Annalee athletes who performed so well.
