Simulations
Simulations
Simulations/Modelling: While a large range of animations are available on the internet (see the fifth link below) the choice of animation should be towards those that allow inquiry, allow data collection, allow data processing or promote the skills required of the conclusion and evaluation criterion. Simulations and models can permit hypotheses or predictions to be generated, variables to be changed and data to be recorded for further processing. Conclusions can be drawn and weaknesses in the model or simulation can be identified.
Consistent with the rest of the IA scheme, there should be some element of student activity beyond simple viewing of an animation.
In the Cells Alive activity students can create a data table to record changes in cell population with time.
In the Flashy Fish activity they can form and test hypotheses.
In the virtual karyotype activity they can draw conclusions from observations.
In the molecular visualization activity, students can manipulate an image and make observations.
In the stromatolite explorer simulation, students can gather data and draw conclusions
In the honeybee simulation, students can test hypothesis
