It seems what one sees in abstract art is brought about by their own experiences and life journey. It is these factors that can guide the viewer's response to the design, color and composition of a piece. My pieces tend to be aesthetic wanderings. My personality is that of a venturer and the visual freedom that abstraction affords me has greatly contributed to my artistic evolution.
Most of my abstract work is mixed media, be it a painting or a print. The primary mediums in my paintings are acrylics, oils, modeling paste, paper, pencil, oil pastels, inks and foils. I most often work on canvas. In the initial stages of planning a painting I start with a quick scribble or color sketch on paper. With a concept in mind I will usually build texture on the canvas before applying the base coat of my background color. I'll then make a few quick gestures on the canvas to transfer my initial idea for the painting and to serve as a guide to the main blocks of color.
Sometimes color is the driving force in the initial stages, sometimes shape or composition leads. I'll apply layer upon layer of color, using other mediums either with or over the paint as I progress. When I'm creating a piece I find the art continuously challenging me. The painting becomes a process of discovery. A brushstroke or a combination of layered color can alter some of the original concept. It is not a predictable process. The manipulation continues until I'm satisfied with the interpretation of my inspiration.
Paintings range in size from 11" x 14" to very large scale, my largest being a commission that consisted of a series of canvases bolted together to comprise a finished piece 16' x 30'.
