Life has been an interesting journey since the end of 2003 when I was adjusting from the aftermath of an unhappy marriage ending in divorce. Facing huge life decisions in several areas, I walked away from a 13-year career in sports management to answer what I believed was a call to write. My dream job in sports had led me to opportunities managing PR and media needs for the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson, Justin Leonard, David Toms, Shane Matthews (NFL), Steve Everitt (NFL) and part-time work with business associates for NHL players such as Mike Modano, Marty Turco, Brendan Morrow and Derian Hatcher.
It was a very difficult life to leave.
The purpose in stepping away to author a book was not to share tales of adventure in the business world of professional sports (which many encouraged me to do), but to discover a light that had been present throughout my entire life. The light of my older and physically-challenged sister, Kathy. A self-published book, “Redemption by Summer,” resulted from the change of focus and serves as a “pilot” book for a new effort.
RBS was finished in Spring 2004 and is undergoing a third revision, under a new title, following advice and direction from a published author and evaluation from a literary agent. I’ve got the framework and much of the writing done for another manuscript on a separate “top secret” topic, but wait for the opportunity to get it in the right hands at the right time.
Writing in various forms continues to be a passion of mine as does the desire to break into the memoir/spiritual inspiration genres. I’ve posted some work on a blog at http://biggsy.wordpress.com where at one point when time was more available I regularly added new musings and thoughts. Unfortunately, time is not as much of a readily available commodity and the blogging has been temporarily suspended.
Through God’s complete orchestration and divine guidance, this journey has led me to join the “Life in Deep Ellum” cultural center (www.lifeindeepellum.com) as operations director where I also manage Mokah Coffee Bar’s 1,100-capacity concert venue, Live@Mokah. My connection with LIDE began through discussions with their leaders regarding a dream God put on my heart in June 2006 called “The Wasteland.” Inspired by Isaiah 43:19, The Wasteland is a proposed non-profit youth mentoring center modeled after Rocketown in Nashville (www.thewasteland.org).
