The Baron’s Racer (Philodryas baroni) is a slender species of snake from South America that is famous for its protruding nose.  They are an active, semi-arboreal species that will often readily accept rodents as hatchlings.  Despite being mildly venomous and rear-fanged, they are uninclined to bite and are considered harmless to humans.   They are typically aggressive feeders and can be a hardy, beautiful, and exciting species to be working with.

My stock comes from David Fabius, a breeder from Uruguay who has been working with both Baron’s Racers and Mussurana for years.  David has been working with several naturally occurring color variations of the Baron’s Racer.   While most captive specimens in the US are green, Baron’s Racers also come in brown, and even blue and yellow.    The color phases do not act as co-dominant or simple recessive traits, but they do seem to be inheritable.  In the coming years, we hope to learn more about how to produce different color variations of these snakes in captivity.

I will have several pairs available in 2009.  Please feel free to visit the “Available Now” page to see what I currently have and don’t hesitate to email me with any questions.
