COMMON NAME: Yellow and Black poison frog, Bumblebee poison frog.
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Dendrobates Luecomelas
SIZE: 3.5 to 5cm
SEXING AND CHARACTERISTICS: It might be hard to determine sex of these frogs, but the best way is Large heart shape ’Toe Pads’ on male frogs. Males may often be heard calling to females at night. Females tend to have a more rounded body then males. Coloration of these stout frogs are Yellow to orange bands (or spots) on a glossy looking background.
Some may have green legs.
LIGHTING AND HEATING: These Diurnal frogs require a 5.0 UVB, best kept between 74°F (23°C) and 82°F (28°C) during the day, with a drop down to around 70°F (21°C) at night.
HUMIDITY: 70% - 100%
SUBSTRATE: Use... Eco Earth Coconut Fiber Substrate, Zilla Coconut Husk Brick, or ZooMed Eco Earth Loose Coconut Fiber Substrate with a thin layer of Sphagnum moss.
SAFE PLANTS: Ferns, Bromeliads, Tillandsia, Orchids
HOUSING: 2 Frogs for every ten gallons, cage should be abundant with caves, hides, slabs of bark for burrowing, plants, Vines and branches, fake trees etc...
These frogs do very well in small groups and colonies.
WATER NEEDS: Require large shallow water bowl or swimming area. (water in water bowl should be no higher than the frog at rest) Water bowl must be changed every day to prevent bacterial blooms and ammonia. If you choose to have a swimming area, you need a filter I would use the Tetra Reptifilter (decorative water fall version is also great) or Exo Terra Waterfall. You should mist the cage twice a day
DIET: diet should consist of small insects. Best possible choice of food is The flightless fruit fly.
You can order them from places like ’EDS fly Market’ or other insect breeding places. May also be found at local petstores. Pinhead crickets are another ideal choice. When feeding fruitflies all you do is put then all in the cage supply a peice of fruit somewhere on the bottom of tank. And they will reproduce by themselves. When feeding pinhead crickets you should feed them about 30 every 3-4 days.I have known some to use mealworms but this is a terrible choice it. The exo scelloten of the insect can cause impaction in your frog which is an assured death
SUPPLEMENTS AND VITAMINS: Should dust food in Calcium Supplement 2 or three times a week.
