Affordable resources for every coach and athlete

During the last session of the 1st Victorian Sport Psychology Conference (held at Victoria University on 24/25th January 2008) a discussion of ‘Resources sport psychologists might use’ was the topic of conversation (eg. Today Tonight excerpt) and here are some of the suggestions:

Those with a DVD recorder/hard drive and Foxtel have access to programs on the Bio, Fox Sports and movie channels. I highly recommended this strategy, particularly if you need to show excerpts to students or to teams etc.

Google 'sport psychology DVDs' to find the UK website to purchase 6 DVDs (Dan Gould and others) - but they're getting a bit old now (made in the 1990s). Most new sport psych CDs and DVDs are on individual websites (see below) - they’re always flogging stuff!

There's a good self hypnosis (for tennis) CD put out by TennisMind (Robert Heller) - highly recommended to clients for putting onto their iPods (www.directyourmind.com).

Speaking of iPod-type resources, since this conference session I went into iTunes and searched ‘Podcasts psychology sport’ and noticed there are a few good podcasts - and these are free and you can subscribe to them to pick up future episodes.

Web resources include signing up for free e-mailed newsletters at www.competitivedge.com; the Division 47 Listserver discussion group; tennisserver.com; http://coaching.usolympicteam.com/coaching/; www.mindtools.com/; www.peaksports.com/ (This latter one is by Patrick Cohen, and is highly recommended - he’s also got good Podcasts); a golfing resource by Karl Morris at http://www.golf-brain.com/ and www.johnfmurray.com/ (John F Murray has a range of tools for sport & business). These sites often try to sell you materials (books, CDs, DVDs). If you like what they are saying on the website, their material probably is OK.

There’s a great website listing sport psych journals, websites and other materials from around the world at: http://www.intute.ac.uk/socialsciences/cgi-bin/browse.pl?id=114409.

Non-sport psych resources are at www.moodgym.com; www.blackdoginstitute.com; www.beyondblue.org.au; and www.reachout.com.au.

Books by: Richard Bennett (Surfer's Mind), Mike Hussey's discussion of cricket preparation, Lance Armstrong (It’s not about the bike), Bob Rotella (Golf is not a game of perfect), Dan Millman (Way of the peaceful warrior), Paul Mutimer (Zen tennis) and others - The Joy of Burnout, Who moved my cheese?

Movies: Pride; Remember the Titans; Any Given Sunday; We are Marshall; Saving Private Ryan (nothing to do with sport but big on teamwork!).

Posters of movies (www.posters.com) and sporting quotes (various websites and autobiographies) for adding ‘oomph’ to Powerpoint.

Finally, of course, I’ve made a DVD of the conference and will have posted a copy to each conference presenter (who allowed filming of their session) and is available for purchase by those who want to gain PD points but are unable to attend the conference.
