Pocket Sport Psychology

2009

Put a sport psychologist in your pocket!

A series of downloadable files have been created to enable them to be added to a small screen, hand-held device that has .m4v capability and whose content can be managed by iTunes (such as an iPhone, iPod) or .mp4 capability (eg. PSP, mobile phones, mp3 players) to remind athletes and coaches of productive thoughts and behaviours that are most likely to lead to competitive success, and enjoyment of sport.

(Files can also be loaded onto larger devices, with some loss of sharpness in the video however, such as a computer or AppleTV, but only via iTunes, or Quicktime software or Windows Media Player applications.)

Demonstration of the Confidence track

If your computer has security settings that do not allow the broadcast of this Quicktime movie, it is also on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mM4suBiqIPM

Benefits of Pocket Sport Psychology titles

Each title is less than 2 minutes long.

Athletes or coaches use their own equipment, and with ear plugs attached, no-one need know what they listening to.

They can be played prior to competition, or in breaks during competition*, or when evaluating performances after competition. Athletes who travel as passengers to their competition venue on buses, trains, planes or cars now have something upon which to focus their pre-game thoughts. If there is waiting around at the competition venue, or waiting in breaks between performances, or delays in play, the Pocket Sport Psychology titles are designed to remind athletes and coaches of helpful thoughts and behaviours. Each title can be selected independently, so athletes can choose the title most relevant to their situation.

(* if using hand held devices during competition is allowed by the competition organisers)

Each track begins with a relaxation phase, to ‘quieten the mind’ so that the positive messages (in the second half of the track) can be introduced most effectively.

Files can be downloaded in a ‘medium’ (suitable for iPod, or computer in a 480x320 format, approx 5MB in size) or ‘mobile’ (suitable for iPhone, AppleTV or computer in a 640x424 format, approx 4MB in size) quality, designed to fit the size of the hand held device screen. They are moved from the CD to the ‘movies’ icon in iTunes (see instructions, below). Files for a PSP need to be moved to the VIDEO folder of the PSP’s memory stick.

Note: For files to be downloaded to hand held devices without a screen, they need to be downloaded from the CD to the ‘music’ icon in iTunes, not the ‘movies’ icon (see instructions page).
