Green Day - No not the band silly!

I had a chance to watch Oprah yesterday and even though it was a repeat the information was still so valuable. We are pretty green at our household but some of these ideas on how to be more green were new to me. I know...I know....you’ve heard me talk about this in the past, but before you write me off, just check it out. You may learn something new too.

What I liked about these tips were that they were about the little things that we use and do on a daily basis. They are such small little things that some of us may not be conscious about the impact that these little things are having on our beloved Earth. For example:

Napkins: The average person uses 6 napkins per day, 2200 per year. That sounds like a lot to me but think about it...if you are a working person, every time you go out for breakfast or lunch or even a coffee break you are using at least 1 napkin and usually more. I see people all of the time grab a bunch when they are getting something to-go. Do they really need so many? Lots are wasted at fast food joints...you know left on the table...the bus person picks it up and whoosh it’s in the trash - more trees gone in vain. I make it a habit that whenever we grab too many napkins anywhere I leave them in our car for any emergency spills or I bring them into the house and use them while we are eating at home. Most of the time we use cloth napkins over and over. (they rarely get soiled after 1 sitting, unless your a pig or eating ribs:) I can’t even remember the last time I bought paper napkins.

How to be more green: If you use just 1 less napkin per day, it saves 1 billion lbs. ( yes billion!) going toward paper waste per day! To me this is sooo easy.

Junk Mail: We all get it and we’re all tired of it...at least I am. 1 million trees every year goes to producing junk mail! Can you believe it? All of those trees for stuff that we throw away on a daily basis!

How to be more green: I opted out of junk mail awhile ago through some website that I found on line, and I must say that my junk mail did decline and so far it is still at a minimum. So sorry but I don’t remember which one I used and there are quite a few. However if you want to take it a step further and not only reduce your junk mail but have trees planted at the same time GreenDimes is website you should check out. For a measly 20 bucks a year, that’s less than a dime a day, your entire household will be removed from dozens of lists and they’ll plant 10 trees for you! Only receive the catalogs that you want and every junk catalog that they remove, they will plant 1 tree. Isn’t that cool? And they monitor your account every month to make sure you stay off of those lists. I’m going to sign up just for the fact that trees are going to be planted. Sign up for your household or give as a gift.

ATM Receipts: We all us them...what I am talking about is the ATM machines. And every time you ask for a receipt you get a little piece of paper. Well that little insignificant piece of paper that you throw in the trash is one of 8 billion little pieces of paper from all of the ATM transaction per year! That equals a roll of paper 2 billion feet long which equates to wrapping around our world 2 times! When you can visualize it, it has so much more of an impact - doesn’t it?

How to be more green: This one is easy...don’t ask for a receipt.

How else you can be more green: RECYCLE, RECYCLE, RECYCLE. I am always so blown away by people who do not recycle their newspapers. Check this out....1 stack of newspapers saves 1- 40 foot Fir tree. Now don’t you think that tree is worth saving?

I’ve got another website for you: www.earth911.org When you go to this website and type in your zip code it will tell you exactly what you can recycle in your area. No more saying, “I don’t know what I can recycle...can I recycle this?” Now you have no excuse.

GO GREEN AND STAY GREEN!

Debra: Thanks for visiting my blog and for introducing yourself. Firstly, How many are in your pool? Secondly, are you from the same office pool that Anon had mentioned in his comments in December? Either way, I find it very interesting that there is a pool to figure out who are playing the aliens and I find it even more interesting that you think Zen Lill is playing Zmiv. What makes everyone think that someone commenting on my blog is pretending to be an alien commenting on my blog too? I find that fascinating and I am not sure that if I had stumbled onto this blog that I would even think one is connected to the other. Couldn’t it just be humans and aliens meeting and corresponding on my blog with no plan except to teach and learn? Seems easy enough. Why is it that you think that the ones claiming to be aliens aren’t actually aliens? Why not just ask an alien a question that only you would know the answer to? However, if you are thinking about this, I would suggest that you not ask anything too revealing as your answer to your question will be posted on my blog. Of course, if you don’t believe in aliens then your mind would need to come to another conclusion that made sense to you. That being said, from what you pointed out, I could kind of see why you would come to the conclusion that ZL is playing the alien Zmiv. However I must say that your third point: “Their writing is so similar.”, I disagree with. Anyway, good luck in your pool and come back and visit. I’d enjoy hearing your answers to my questions.

Tal: I know...I was so disappointed! 61% of the voting population in Iowa are women!....Again the women blew it...will we ever learn? I have no idea when American women will be as intelligent as women in other countries. It really blows me away that for the first time in history a woman is running for president and the women, the majority of the country’s vote, are not jumping at the opportunity to bring her into office as quickly as they can! And we, women in America, as you say have somewhat fair elections...we don’t have to sneak to the polls...we can vote and not be in fear of who we vote for! Oh you are making my adrenaline rush again.

I waited to post my blog earlier this morning, as I was hoping that you would comment. And quite frankly I was hoping that many more women out there would comment too. But alas they are not showing up here either! I find that on a smaller level in my own life that when I am doing well for myself, there are very few women who support me when I am rising to the top in my field. Could this be an American trait? How can I get upset, I agree with you. I do hope that many women read what you said and they will change their minds when the important moment arrives. Thanks Tal for taking the time and voicing your thoughts that are so right on.

I have so much more to say about what you wrote in yesterdays comments in regards to Corporations etc. but I need to get this posted and I want to re-read what you have written when I have the time to really focus on it. I will save my comments for my blog tomorrow. I will say one thing though....Of the 100 largest economies on earth 51 are corporations compared to 49 in government. And we think the government is running our country?
