Brown Sugar Kitchen

Okay I talked about comfort food the other day and I’m going to blog about it today too...I am just so into it! Aren’t you? I mean when the weather is like this, my body craves something that will give me some warmth, some fat on my bones...just a little. I think it is perfectly fine to put on a few pounds during the holidays as long as one doesn’t over do it! It is all about tasting and enjoying and only filling yourself up to about 75% of your capacity. That is what I do; I push myself away from my plate when I am just satisfied and NOT full. I am so over that feeling of, “My stomach hurts and I can’t move!” Oh no, I do not do that to myself anymore. Well sometimes...but sometimes the pain is worth it. Read on...

Tanya Holland, our dear friend, Chef and author of her published cookbook (I have it and I love it!), “New Soul Cooking”, who hosted a series on the Food Network, is fulfilling her dream. Tanya is opening up her New Soul Food restaurant “Brown Sugar Kitchen”, in January, and yeh! - in West Oakland! Another reason to eat and play on this side of the bay! Tanya is a serving up a wonderful compilation of Southern style cooking with a bit of Caribbean, African and Creole flavors tossed in - sound good? You bet and Doug and I can attest to that!

This past weekend, we, along with a few other lucky ones, got invited over to “Brown Sugar Kitchen” to sample a few of the southern specialties and I must say they were quite special Wonderfully delicious in fact! While waiting for our food to arrive we sipped Mimosa’s and tea. Tanya sent over a cornmeal waffle and a plate of fried chicken for us to sample. Yum, waffles are my favorite and I was so grateful to be able to try some of these. This is no joke...they were the best waffles I have ever eaten. They were so light and the edges were slightly crispy, but the best part of all was the Apple Cider Vinegar syrup that we drizzled on top. It was simply delicious and so different! I finished off the waffle while Doug happily ate the fried chicken. And, the good news...afterwards it didn’t sit heavy in our stomachs....good thing too because our order was right behind - Doug ordered the herbed scrambled eggs with a home-made biscuit and pork sausage gravy slathered all over, and a side of grits! Ahh....Do you think he’ll be able to finish it all? I ordered the sweet potato hash eggs benedict. Not your typical at all! - this sumptuous plate was complete with sweet potatoes and yams, red peppers and onions, and topped off with two poached eggs and poblano sauce. Don’t these dishes just look too divine to eat? Oh no - We ate up every last bite of it! Need-less-to-say, I didn’t follow my 75% rule. I left full...but pleasantly full - It was so worth it.

Interested in dining on some new southern delights? Well, be sure to check out “Brown Sugar Kitchen” in January. Tanya plans to be open early for breakfast through lunch and eventually be open for dinners as well. Can’t wait till then? Okay, come by the Oakland Museum tonight from 5-10 PM, for a “Night at the Museum”, featuring a soul food cooking demo by Chef Tanya Holland! We’ll be there - hope to see you!
