Eating Disorders with Art Therapy Workshop

14 hours of CEC’s
Two days, 9 am - 5 pm
Program Description:
This program is designed to educate therapists about the population of eating disorders which is rarely discussed in depth in graduate training programs, & is growing at an alarming rate. Seven million women and one million men in the United States suffer from eating disorders & more struggle with sub-clinical disturbed eating patterns. An art therapist does not have to be working at a treatment facility that specializes in eating disorders to come in contact with clients that suffer from disordered eating. This workshop will educate art therapists and other clinicians about the symptoms, signs, and interventions that may be utilized to identify and treat individuals with eating disorders.
Art therapy may be used as an effective treatment tool for the spectrum of eating disorders. Discussions of the theories of etiology concerning eating disorders will illuminate why the art therapy process is a natural modality of treatment for these clients often viewed as difficult to treat by many clinicians. This workshop will offer specific tasks and over 200 examples of eating disordered artwork as well as examine how these behaviors are manifested in the artwork.
In addition to the contributions art therapy brings to the treatment of eating disordered clients, primary prevention tactics will be discussed in order to give participants of this workshop tools they may utilize, once they return to their communities, to combat the influences that impact self-esteem and body image perceptions. Participants in this workshop will be educated about how to become proactive in your community by utilizing media and other community resources.
Program & Participant Learning Objectives:
•	Attendees will be able to identify the spectrum of eating disordered behaviors as well as the manifestations of these behaviors as seen in patients’ art work.
•	Attendees will be able to identify the signs and symptoms of co-morbidity the often seen with eating disordered clients, such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse and post traumatic stress disorder.
•	Participants will learn how art and the art psychotherapy process may be used to move eating disordered patients beyond traditional therapies -- more than two dozen specific tasks and examples will be illustrated and discussed.
•	Participants will learn at least (7) seven pro-active methods that they may use in their community to address society’s body oriented focus and make changes in their community as well as nationally.
