Spending the summer doing research in the lab of a professor at a
non-Yale university or medical center

Many Yale students spend the summer working in a lab at a university or medical center other than Yale, typically one in or near their home town.  This allows them to see their family over the summer, and often students can return to the same lab for two or three summers in a row to continue on the same or a related project.

To find a lab to work in, I suggest you follow strategies similar to those I recommend for finding a lab at Yale.  The main difference is that you will have a harder time getting good information about the various professors and labs at the institution you are targeting.  Most research institutions have a graduate program with a Web site that lists all the professors and gives summaries of their research, so use this as a starting point.

You can ask your academic advisor at Yale to help you find an appropriate lab at another institution.  They can tell you what institutions near your home town have the best scientific reputations.  Your advisor may know some of the faculty at the institution, or refer you to someone who does.  Also, your advisor may be able to look at the research blurbs and publication lists from faculty you are considering and give you his/her opinion.  Finally, your academic advisor may be able to write a reference letter for you to help convince a faculty member at your institution of choice to take you.
