Born and raised in London, Campbell trained as a scientist has a honors degree in geology, but many of his hobbies were in the arts. His first job was in the Kodak  Research Laboratory as an assistant to world famous colour scientist Dr. R.W.G.Hunt.


The jobs in geology were in places like the North Sea on an oil rig, so he took a job as senior lecturer at Salisbury College of Art where he taught photo technology and documentary film production in the 70s and worked free lance for the BBC.


In 1979 he  came to California to write an article about Ansel Adms and stayed with him in Carmel.  He became a teacher at Cal Poly State University in San Luis Obispo .


Campbell has pioneered digital Painting since the early nineties and teaches the revolutionary new techniques of digital photography.
