Why use a “C” and not a “K” when spelling Corea? Well, the short answer is that the word was spelled “Corea” with a “C” until Japan invaded in the early 20th century. It is popularly believed that they felt it inappropriate that “C” came before “J” in the alphabet, so they changed it to “K” and it stuck.

Now, we’re fairly certain that the above isn’t accurate and that it has more to do with the similar sounds of “K” and “C” but we like the “C” spelling more.
