THINKING INTERNSHIP?
A couple of years ago I walked into a well-known NYC Times Square recording studio to meet with the owner and was greeted by a gaggle of interns in the reception area – a bunch of young guys hanging around waiting for some sort of meaningful studio action. I honestly felt kinda’ bad for these kids. If you intern with us, I promise you won’t find yourself waiting around for some scrap to fall off the table – some menial task to fall into your lap.  Our interns get put into the thick of the action. You’ll get plenty of time in the studio/editing suite and/or on live remote gigs.
We only host a couple of interns at a time and consequently have high expectations of those we choose. We have a few important requirements:
    1.    Your internship must be part of an accredited college requirement for course completion and graduation. We make few exceptions.

    2.    If audio, please be proficient in major recording technologies such as Pro Tools and/or a large format console, such as the SSL. If video, you must be able to handle a video camera with ease and have solid understanding of Final Cut Pro. We will also consider those working in a music business major, to help with business development and administration.

    3.    You will be expected to meet your time obligations just like at school or at a job. To this end when you are scheduled for a studio/editing session or remote gig, you will be expected to be on time and to stay to the bitter end, until all is cleaned-up and put away.

    4.    And yes, there will be some menial tasks, like cleaning the studios, truck, lounges or the kitchen. If you don’t help, then we have to do it – its part of the business. If you think that this kind of work is beneath you, then don’t bother applying.

    5.    In that you will not be an employee of the studio, you must have proof of health insurance, per chance you get hurt while here and need medical attention.

Now lets’ talk about time…
    1.    We have three internship sessions per year: 1) Winter/Spring; 2) Summer and; 3) Fall/Winter. You commitment is for the complete session, not some minimum number of hours your school requires. No exceptions

    2.    We will work out a mutually acceptable schedule as best we can. However, keep in mind that we expect you to be available when WE need you and for at least fifteen to twenty hours per week consecutively for the duration of your internship. Expect to end up putting in more hours than your school requires.

    3.    When you join our team, you will be expected to work every major remote video/recording event scheduled during your internship. Some will come up quickly with little notice. You must be there. Sorry, no excuse such as work, school, boyfriend/girlfriend will get you out of it. A no-show for any reason other than your Mom’s funeral is cause to end the relationship.

Sounds kinda’ harsh, does it? Well, from our perspective, we have invested a lot of money and done a lot of hard work to build a business that will provide you with an opportunity of a lifetime. Just as you will depend on us to make this rare opportunity available to you, we depend on you to help us get important work done. What goes around comes around.
One final thought on this subject: So what would you remember most? A day spent stocking shelves at Wal-Mart, or a day spent working on a high-definition video shoot of a world-famous band at a major venue such as the Tweeter Center for broadcast on network like MTV. Which do you think would look best on your resume? If you have a hard time sorting out these priorities, then maybe you should not be in this business. Think about it…
As one of New England’s premier media production facilities, there is a lot of competition for the few slots we have. As such we can be selective. We are looking for only the best, brightest, most motivated students of the craft.
You’ll find an internship with us will expose you to wide variety of highest quality music, video and recording experiences. I believe every serious intern who has done time with us has found it to be exceptionally fun, challenging and enlightening. Above all, we are friendly, fun, unpretentious bunch to hang around and always like sharing our knowledge and experience with those who are genuinely interested.
