Mesa Sister Cities’ golf tournament supports growing student exchange program
The Mesa Sister Cities Association is hosting the 8th Annual International Open Golf Tournament on Saturday, April 23 at Alta Mesa Golf Club, 1460 N. Alta Mesa Dr. Mesa Sister Cities is a nonprofit organization that supports activities involving Mesa and its five Sister Cities in Guaymas, Mexico; Upper Hutt, New Zealand; Caraz, Peru; Kaiping, China; and Burnaby, Canada.
Proceeds from the golf tournament will directly benefit the Mesa Sister Cities student exchange program. This program offers Mesa students and their families the opportunity to interact with youth from other nations, promoting education, friendship and cultural understanding.
“This golf tournament is always a fun day and it is for a great cause,” Mayor Scott Smith said. “Mesa Sister Cities’ student exchange allows students from Mesa to explore the cultures and customs of other countries and vice versa.” This year, two students from Upper Hutt, New Zealand spent a month in Mesa learning about American culture and the history of flight at our airports.
Sister Cities International recently received a U.S. Department of State grant to administer the Youth Ambassador’s Program: North America. This program will bring high school students and educators from the U.S., Canada and Mexico together for two, three-week exchanges during the summers of 2011 and 2012. Mesa Sister Cities was included for the 2011 exchanges. Cities were chosen based on their strong, existing trilateral relationships with their North American partners.
“It is a great honor for Mesa Sister Cities to be selected to participate in the Youth Ambassador’s Program,” Mesa Sister Cities President Ana Cadillo said. “Students from Arizona, Canada and Mexico will be participating in the trilateral exchange.”
