Spring in Belgrade

Spring in Belgrade

Spring is my favorite time of year. Grey skies are pushed away by clear blue ones. The warmth of the spring sun, in combination with the beautiful flowering trees, prompt people to enjoy the many parks or just go for a walk. During the spring, the cafés put out their outdoor tables, making going to a café enjoyable again.

Topčider Park, located in the valley below the region of Senjak, has been a favorite destination for Belgrade citizens for over 150 years. Its name is Turkish, meaning canon valley, since this was the place where the Turks cast canons for the attack on Belgrade in 1521. Visitors to this beautiful park will find a charming bridge, the Prince Miloš castle (1831) drinking fountain, church, cafés, and a vast expanse of lush trees included some huge sycamore trees dating back to 1831. The oldest park in Belgrade, Topčider was the location of the 1868 assassination of Prince Mihailo Obrenović, the Serbian leader who took control of Belgrade from the Turks.
