Montenegro

On our way to the airport in Tivat, we were able to enjoy several hours in the Montenegrian town of Kotor. This sleepy town is at the head of southern Europe’s deepest fjord. The challenging hike up to the old fortifications on the mountainside above the Old Town provided rewarding views of the topography. The Old Town, listed as a UNESCO site, has four kilometers of walls built over a thousand years from the 9th century. Like other old towns we had visited on our trip, the narrow streets are maze-like and open up to town squares. For such a small town, the number of churches (including six Romanesque churches from the 12th and 13th century) was quite remarkable.
