Kalemegdan

Kalemegdan

Situated at the confluence of the Sava and Danube Rivers, the ancient fortress of Kalemegdan is a prominent feature of Old Belgrade. Early remnants from the Neolithic period have been discovered, along with Celtic, Roman, and Byzantine settlements. In the early 15th century, existing fortifications were renovated and expanded. One can still see many of the structures built during Despot Stefan Lazarevic’s rule. After several unsuccessful sieges, the Turks finally broke through its strong fortifications, thus taking control of the city. Today Kalemegdan is a frequently visited park, offering places to relax, eat, enjoy the views, and even visit a zoo.
