Queering Adaptations of Nineteenth-Century Novels
Queering Adaptations of Nineteenth-Century Novels
This project deals with cinematographic adaptations of seven novels published throughout the nineteenth century: Jane Austen's Emma, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Walter Scott's Rob Roy, Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights, Charles Dickens' Olivier Twist, Elizabeth Braddon's Lady Audley's Secret, and R. L. Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Based on my work and research in film studies, this project considers the queer subtexts present in these works, and how they are dealt with, if at all, by the directors of selected film versions. My theoretical approach engages with the work of Judith Butler, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, and Terry Castle. [This project is supported by SSHRC grants.] I was interviewed in the Université de Montréal newspaper about this project last year. (The interview in French is available in pdf: Forum E-S.pdf.)
