Purpose


The McCall Primary Guidance and Counseling Program will work collaboratively with stakeholders to maximize opportunities and remove barriers so that each student will be a successful learner in the areas of academic achievement, personal & social development, and career exploration.


Cobb County Schools’ counseling program is developmental in scope and proactive in delivery.  The proactive/preventative approach is designed to educate students, Kindergarten through First grade, in life skills necessary for social and academic development.


Mission


Our Mission is to empower all students to maximize their full potential in the area of academic, career, and social/emotional growth.  Students will become successful learners because learning is always possible at McCall Primary School.


      Beliefs


The McCall Primary School Counseling Program believes:

-All students have dignity and worth.

-Students have the right to participate in the school-counseling program.

-Students have access to an ethical and certified counselor that works to safeguard the human rights of all members of the school community.

-Students should have a safe learning environment.

-The professional school counselor will demonstrate the effectiveness of the school counseling program in measurable terms.

-The professional school counselor will collaborate with stakeholders in planning and implementing a comprehensive school counseling program.


Vision


The vision of the McCall Primary School Counseling program is to provide a comprehensive program that addresses the academic, career and personal/social development of all students. The program will assist students in overcoming barriers that interfere with students’ educational experience.  By collaborating with students, educators, parents or guardians, and the local community McCall professional school counselors will foster and help maximize academic achievement and social growth; Thus, advocating and preparing students to be contributing members of society.


Counseling Services


INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING


Personal, social, and academic counseling is available during the school day.  It should be noted that individual counseling is not therapeutic in nature, as it is beyond the role of the school counselor to conduct in-depth, on-going individual sessions.


GROUP COUNSELING


Students may attend counseling with groups of children who have common interests or concerns.  Referrals will be given to counselors from parents, teachers, and administrators.  These groups may include the following:


Anger Management Group

Social Skills Group

Self-Esteem Group

Family Changes Group

Peer Relations Group


The counselor is available to assist parents with concerns regarding their children. In addition, the counselor may facilitate in referring parents to appropriate community resources for specific needs.



CLASSROOM GUIDANCE


The guidance program’s foundation for the instruction of life skills meets the American School Counselor Association National Model.  Students in Kindergarten through Fifth grade receive instruction in the three major content areas listed below:
