Most of Mayberry mourned the loss of one its own today.
Bennie was a former school mate of mine. A year older than me, he died suddenly on Sunday, leaving behind three kids, a new grand-baby, a large, extended family, and countless friends.
He was the first boyfriend of one of my J friends. He dated another J friend in junior high, who later dated his cousin in high school. My cousin married his youngest brother. Another of his brothers performed in Mayberry’s Clown Troupe with me. Such are the threads that weave a community like ours together.
Though many years and miles had separated us, I kept up with him through family and friends. Today’s remembrances reminded us all why he was so beloved.
He had a smile that could charm a snake. Perhaps it’s so memorable because it came easier and stayed longer than most. Even in serious moments, his smile was never far away, lurking at the corner of his mouth for the opportunity to brighten your day. Wherever Bennie was, you were sure to find something fun or interesting happening. In my mind, he’ll always look like he did at age 16 -- confident, strong, and mischievous, a wave of brown hair bobbing above eyes that were always lit with excitement.
Bennie had some tough times over the years, but I always got the feeling that his difficulties never diminished his buoyant spirit or his trademark joie de vivre. Today, it was that joy that sustained all who love him.
To his family -- Bob, Dee, Tony, Steve, Samantha, Lacey, Walker and Wyatt -- I hope you felt the love of Mayberry’s arms around you today. It was love Bennie planted here years ago and bloomed just when he knew you’d need it.
