Volume XIII, Issue 1
Autumn/Winter 2007-8
About the painting.
By Ronaldo Macedo.

Kapalua is a place of big views. The Pailolo and Au Au channels between northwest Maui and Molokai showcase one of the most majestic, big views on Maui. This was definitely a horizontal composition for my style of painting.
To convert this view into a 12" x 24" painting was quite a challenge. When out in the field, I felt lucky when the clouds formed overhead and produced some unexpected shadows on an otherwise beautifully sunny crisp Kapalua morning.
I love shadows. It adds drama and it breaks up big shapes.
This view from the tenth green was initially Gary Planos’ idea. Then after a couple of trips to the course, I made it my own. The delicate and interesting shapes towards the right half of the painting are what I first found attractive about this view.
The left half of the painting supports what is going on on to the right. Many panoramas can often be cropped into many separate vertical images. And since this was true for this painting as well, I chose the right side for this cover.
This painting reminds me of how lucky we are to live on Maui.
Enjoy, Ronaldo.
