David Paul’s Lahaina Grill sets the standard for excellence in Hawaii for cuisine, service, and atmosphere. That’s why virtually every reviewer who has ever dined here has loved it. It’s really that good.
One of the many things that stand out at David Paul’s Lahaina Grill is the variety and creativity of the menu. The panoply of selections, one more enticing than the next, is simply beyond temptation.
Maybe that is why this famed bistro has been voted “Best Maui Restaurant” for 13 years running by the readers of Honolulu magazine. It’s that good.
Like a symphony of the senses, it all originates from a vision that emanates, like a “thousand points of light,” from owners Jurg and Linda Munch. Executive Chef Arnulfo Gonzalez is like the conductor, shaping that vision into a culinary reality. The entirety of it all—the elements and people that are David Paul’s Lahaina Grill—is akin to an orchestra: balanced, spontaneous, dedicated, and refined. Service is perfection. Flowers freshly cut. Brass is polished, and crystal illuminates. All of the senses are aroused. It’s that good.
During my recent visit, I studied the menu intently, and decided to start with the Crisp Fried Blue Corn Crusted Chile Relleno. It was filled with Hawaiian Big Island prawns, scallops, and Monterey jack cheese, and served on roasted sweet Kula corn relish with Fuerte avocados and red tomato salsa. Wow! The presentation and explosion of flavors were fantastic!
Between courses, I took time to admire the artwork gracing the walls of this charming, trendy place. How beautiful the colors all are. The whole experience was fantastic.
My main course was next. With the first bite of the Kona Coffee Roasted Rack of Lamb, I knew I had made the right menu choice. It was cleverly accompanied by a light coffee-Cabernet demi-glace, steamed Kula veggies, and herb-infused mashed potatoes. I was so delighted by the flavors that burst forth in my mouth that delight shone on my face.
Jurg, and favorite waiter and wine sommelier Richard Olsen III, have taken the time to make a wine recommendation for each dessert offering. These are drawn from the well-rounded selection of wines on hand (which includes quite an ample offering of half-bottles too). I wasn’t leaving without trying at least one dessert, so I ordered the Sunken Chocolate Cake, a flourless chocolate decadence with Kona coffee ice cream that conjured up one word: “Magnificent!”
I witnessed yet another exceptional dinner at David Paul’s Lahaina Grill, where the bar for culinary art is always raised to the top.
Yes! In a nutshell, it was that good. •
