kapalua bay course

The 6,600-yard, par-72 Bay course opened in 1975 and was designed by Arnold Palmer and Frank Duane. Its layout features rolling, hilly terrain, 68 bunkers, eight water hazards, a slope of 136, and a course rating of 72.1. The Bay course is routed through the mountains, up hills, down ravines, through thick stands of Cook pines and ironwood trees, and around pineapple fields. It also winds its way down to the surf, where two holes, the par-4 No. 4, and the par-3 No. 5, both meet the Pacific ocean at the Oneloa Bay. (The fifth is the only golf hole on Maui that plays clear over the crashing sea.)  The back nine plays at various elevations and features a good mixture of water, bunkers, hills, ravines, and gulches. One example is the 371-yard, uphill, par-4 16th. This  demanding hole calls for a tee shot to carry a water hazard and land on either side of a fairway divided by a winding gulch. The Bay course offers plenty of birdie opportunities but has a lot of  bite too. The Bay course has hosted many PGA TOUR events, USGA championships, and has been home to  many TOUR players over the years. It is a course that will withstand the tests of time. Jerry Pang-Ching, PGA, is the Bay Course head golf professional. •

The oceanfront par-3 fifth at Kapalua’s Bay Course features a forced carry over the crashing surf.
