The kaanapali kai course

The Kaanapali Kai Course originally opened in 1967 as an executive course. However, demand for two full courses grew, and in 1976, the Kaanapali Kai Course was redesigned by Arthur Jack Snyder to become a regulation 6,388-yard layout. But over the course of time, advances in golf equipment technology, coupled with the modernization of irrigation systems, and the advent of better turfgrasses paved the way for a major revitalization, which has just been completed. Famed course architect Robin Nelson was tapped to take the best of Jack Snyder’s work and bring it into the new millennium. The result is a new golf course, with classic architectural features from Snyder’s era still to be found. The course meanders high up into the West Maui foothills, where views and vistas abound. New turfgrasses on the fairways, and on the array of new tee boxes, give way to the Kaanapali Kai Course’s sleek TifEagle greens. Views have been opened up too. No. 11, a par 3 stretching 189 yards, was redesigned to point the tees straight out to the edge of Molokai. Since reopening, the Resort South has been hailed by the media, local golfers, and visitors alike. They say Kaanapali is  “Where the world comes to play.” Nothing could be more true. •

The Kaanapali Kai Course has been completely revamped into a world-class venue by Robin Nelson.
