about us
Who we are, and what we do.
The Maui Golf Review is published by John Byrne, a 14-year Maui resident, and the company’s sole proprietor. John worked in the magazine business in New York for 13 years, where his first job was an assistant bookkeeper at Leaders Magazine, in 1982.
John moved to the sales side of publishing three years later, joining Grosvenor Press, in 1985. He left Grosvenor Press, as an associate publisher, and joined Madison Square Press as a SVP and associate publisher. From there he moved Institutional Investor, then onto several other companies before he started his own business on Maui in 1995, called the Maui Golf Review.
The Maui Golf Review began as a monthly newspaper. It grew to cover all of Hawaii in 1997, and was called Island Golf Review. In 1999, a Carlsbad company called Parvalu, offered to buy the Island Golf Review, but financial troubles brought Parvalu to bankruptcy shortly afterward.
John relaunched the Maui Golf Review as a 32-page, glossy, quarterly visitor publication in 2000. Over the past seven years, the Maui Golf Review has grown to become one of the largest print periodicals in Hawaii, with the latest issue due this January to consist of 134 pages of golf content for Maui.
Since 1999, John has also worked for the Dunes at Maui Lani as a marketing consultant.
The Maui Golf Review has two regular freelance administrative assistants: Marie Lenz, and Davilla Riddle. All articles, and most photography and layout work, is done by John, but over the years, the Maui Golf Review has benefitted from the help of countless people.
Martha (Maria) Council has always been John’s biggest supporter. She helped John start the Maui Golf Review back in 1995, and was the first sponsor of the guide. As owner of the Maui Golf Shop, she helps the Maui Golf Review sell its golf certificates to golfers who are on-island.
Chuck Cassidy was the Maui Golf Review’s first designer. A former freelance worker for Jack Byrne, Chuck moved to Maui in 1995 to help launch the Maui Golf Review, but after his second year, he found new opportunities to grow his design business on Maui and moved on.
Carolyn Quan was the pivotal contributor the the Maui Golf Review’s transition from a very simple guide, to a more sophisticated print publication. Carolyn’s four gold records for cover designs at Arista Records underscore her considerable talents as a photographic montage artist. It is in her expanding gallery business that Carolyn is now finding her deserved stardom. We miss her dearly.
The Maui Golf Review is entering a new phase of growth. The template that it now is will be marketed to other Hawaii and mainland destinations as a travel marketing and planning tool for visitors and resorts alike.
Review Publications is the parent company that will help with the exciting new growth plans that are emanating from our studio office in Kahului. We look forward to serving our sponsors and our readers for many years to come.
Aloha!
