The current village shop did not sell at the auction that was held on the 28th May 2008. The community shop committee did put forward an offer, which was declined. The current owners would prefer to wait and try to sell the shop when the market improves.
On behalf of the community the committee have decided that to ensure a village shop remains in East Garston a planning application will be made to West Berkshire District Council for the development of the East Garston Village Hall car park to provide a purpose built shop and seating area. The outline of the shop has been marked out behind the social club. (Hopefully still there, despite the wet weather)
When the plans are ready, the committee will hold an open day in the Village Hall so that the community may look at the plans, it is also hoped that the’ new shop’ suppliers will have stands in the hall so that the community may be able to sample some of the produce that will be available!
The post office is almost ready to be mobile and will transfer to the village hall within the next month. Since the unit is now mobile the services that can be offered will be far better than those which are currently available. Sue will also bring some essentials from her shop in Aldbourne e.g. bread, milk etc. She can also fulfil any other shopping requirements if the orders are given to her.
Thanks to all those in the community that have bought shares in the shop, we still need more of you to come forward, the more support we have from the community the better the chance the shop has of being a viable, vibrant and focal point of our community.
Thank you for your continuing support,
East Garston Community Shop Committee
