OK - so I am a bit behind on posting. Here is the pre-port song for Mauritius - one that focuses on the main risk there - alcohol related problems. You will notice that some of the kids are in costumes playing the roles of the executive team (notice that my daughters are bald, with Erin playing the role of Ron “the Voice” the assistant exec dean, and Kate playing her Dad with my stethoscope draped around her neck and wearing my clothes).
The lyrics:
To the tune of “There ain’t nothin’ like a dame” from South Pacific
We got sunlight on the sand
We got moonlight on the sea
We got mangos and bananas
We can pick right off the tree
We got villas that we rented and respect most graciously
What do we need
Sobriety
We go hiking in the mountains
We go swimming in the sea
We get scuba in the ocean and advice from Dean Larry
We rent surfboards at the beach
We love to ride the swell
What do we need
You know darn well
Our behavior when we drink too much there’s no excuse for
What we need there ain’t no substitute for
We need our sobriety
That is what we need
Yes, for everyone’s safety
We will need our sobriety
Brazil had Carnival and excesses there some bought
In Cape Town there were punchbowls
Where some drank an awful lot
Some were brought home by their friends, some got back the best they could
What didn’t we feel
We didn’t feel good!
We want to have lots of fun because that’s what we’re there for….
Friends drinking too much is what we need to care for…
We need our sobriety
That is what we need
Yes, for everyone’s safety
We will need our sobriety
So suppose a night ain’t right
Or completely free of flaws
Or the day becomes quite boring
Or your nervous just because
Now suppose your friends are drinking and you want to fit right in
What must you make
Your own decision
There ain’t a thing that’s wrong with any kid here
That can’t be cured by keeping them clear
From falling coconuts, alcohol drinks and beer!
