Samite

Note from Matt about Samite:
A few years ago I heard that a great kalimba player named Samite was performing in a theater in which I had previously performed. In the green room where the musicians wait I left a Kalimba and some rhythm shakers on a table and then I left the room for a moment. Upon returning Samite and all the musicians were around the instruments trying them out.

I had never heard my work sing like it did in the hands of Samite and his friends. That evening started a deep appreciation in me for this great musician.

I have since made special instruments for Samite. He plays them all over the world bringing joy to all he encounters.

Matt,
I am like a kid waiting for a new toy, except this one is real and it is going to make music that will touch many people's hearts.
Thank you, Samite

Matt,
I recorded a beautiful song using the new Kalimba last night. This instrument will also have many songs like the other one (you made for me).
thank you, Samite

Bio - Samite was born and raised in Uganda, where his grandfather taught him to play traditional African flute before his fingers were long enough to cover all the sound holes on the flute. When he was twelve, a music teacher placed a western flute in his hands—setting him on his way to becoming one of East Africa’s most acclaimed flutists. He performed frequently to enthusiastic audiences throughout Uganda until 1982, when he was forced to flee to Kenya as a political refugee.

Samite immigrated to the United States in 1987, and now makes his home in Ithaca, New York. Tunula Eno, his sixth CD

In 2002, Samite founded Musicians for World Harmony (www.musiciansforworldharmony.org) not-for-profit organization dedicated to enabling musicians throughout the world to share their music to promote peace, understanding, and harmony among peoples, with a special emphasis on the displaced or distressed who can benefit most from the healing power of music. In that capacity he travels as often as possible, with as many people as care to join him, to sing, play music, and exchange stories.
