Although she looks a bit like mawkish MOR super queen Dido, Marnie’s music could not be any different.
To my amateur eyes she seems like a truly incredible guitarist who shreds, slaps and thrashes away with gay abandon. However, my enthusiasm for her music was tempered somewhat by a Facebook conversation with Matthew from Hot Club, who postulates that her popularity is down to ‘inverse sexism’ and that she doesn’t really push herself as a guitarist. So that was me told. I don’t really mind because a. he is in a position to say those things and b. the internet is such a marvellous thing that I can converse with my favourite band about music.
Anyhoo Marnie Sterns makes a sound that’s a bit prog and a bit thrash which might sound dreadful but the songs really work well.
The New York Times called her recent album ‘In advance of the broken arm’ “2007’s most exciting rock n roll album”. So there.
