Class 5-1600 Off Road Racing
It all started in the early part of 2007, when I was watching the movie “From Dust to Glory” which is a film documenting the 2003 running of the TECATE SCORE International BAJA 1000 off road race in Baja California, Mexico. While watching the movie, I began to think about how it had always been a dream of mine from way back when I was just a kid to someday be able to race in the Baja 1000. I always loved playing in the dirt on foot or machine but really liked to go fast and slide around curves on dirt roads, first on a mini bike, then a three wheeler and then my truck and sometimes in a Porsche 944. I had always thought it was far fetched to think I could actually run in the Baja 1000 race, one because it is so far away and two, you had to have a very expensive high performance vehicle for off road racing. In “From Dust to Glory” , I realized that I could run even on a motorcycle if I wanted or there were many different classes of vehicles, from the big Trophy Trucks down to the new side by side ATV’s now on the market.
So I called up my long time friend Tom Smith of Geneva, Texas and said “Hey, I know something we can do.... Lets race in the Baja 1000 this year in November.” I knew Tom was like me in that he is always up to a challenge and when he sets his mind and commits to something, he has the internal drive to make it a reality. He said “Alright...Sounds good to me. What are we going to drive?.” So that is where the plan emerged to race in the 40th annual running of the 2007 Tecate SCORE Baja 1000.
