On this web page I have selected  twenty-one Mark Bulwinkle woodblock prints created from 1967 to 2008. I have digitally re-created these Bulwinkle woodcuts so that I can print them here in my studio with an Epson ink jet printer using archival inks and paper, which is 8.5” x 11” 300 weight Moab entrada rag natural paper made by Legion Paper Company. I have re-created these particular Mark Bulwinkle  woodblock prints this way from the original woodblocks, which I carved and printed from pieces of 12” x 18” pine or douglas fir.  I must emphasize that these prints are not merely photographic reproductions of the original work,  reduced and printed with an inkjet printer. While I started with a good digital photograph of the original larger print, along the way to the final product I have manipulated considerably the digital image with Photoshop in order to capture the spirit and quality of the larger black and white woodblock print. These are not simply copies of photographs. In many ways I like the smaller inkjet version better than the full size block print.

My primary reason for doing this project is to try to make my  graphic work more accessible to a broader audience by making the work more affordable. A practical advantage to the smaller size is that the print can be easily and simply framed by you in an inexpensive black frame - found these days for under ten dollars at any department store or drug store - without sacrificing the integrity of the image within. These prints are produced on standard U.S. letter sized stock and can reside very happily in inexpensive frames!  More professional framing solutions are always possible but not necessarily required, certainly not by me, the artist. Archival framing for art work can be prohibitively expensive for most of us, but for the more discerning among us seem to be a requirement. Either way, I think they look quite wonderful.  Shipping and handling costs are also greatly reduced as are production costs using this format. What you see displayed here is but a small sample of a much, much larger portfolio of graphic work, which I may show in the future on these web pages and offer for sale.
