The Fort Town Concert Association (FTCA) is a voluntary community effort with a mission to mount classical music concerts of professional quality in rural Eastern Ontario . It also seeks to encourage music appreciation in a younger audience by making concert presentations in schools, and offering free evening tickets to children under 12. FTCA is served by a volunteer committee of 9 members.
Established in 1982, FTCA serves an area on the St. Lawrence River, south of Ottawa , encompassing the town of Prescott , adjacent townships of Augusta and Edwardsburgh/Cardinal, and the city of Brockville. Audience is also drawn from Kemptville to the north, Iroquois to the east, and occasionally from New York state across the river.
From the beginning, FTCA has partnered with Jeunesses Musicales of Canada (JMC) to bring in young professional musicians, and over the years it has showcased the world-class talents of Ofra Harnoy, Russell Braun, James Ehnes, The Gryphon Trio, Lara and Scott St. John, Maureen Forrester, and Stewart Goodyear, among a great many others.
Since its inception, FTCA has enjoyed a facility partnership with the St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church.
The church’s superb acoustics offer an intimate setting for performances, and there’s lots of free parking on Prescott ’s quiet streets.
In 1995 FTCA partnered with the South Grenville Guild of Fine Art, to showcase art exhibits at the concerts. Since 2000 it has annually presented the Walter Hofmann award (honouring a retired local music teacher and founding Committee member)to the instrumental winner in the Brockville Lions Music Festival. Its website was established in 2001.
On September 1-3 2006, FTCA hosted the JMC annual congress. It was honored to be the first JMC centre in Ontario to host the congress.
Financial support has come gratefully and regularly from the Ontario Arts Council and from the Town of Prescott . Fund raising activities, initiated in 1999, have been successful in obtaining support from subscribers and local businesses. Since 2000, concert sponsors have also raised the level of financial commitment.
FTCA is privileged to have on the Committee as an honourary member, Mrs. Jean Wadds, former MP and former High Commissioner to the Court of St James.
