Marcy Stonikas, soprano

 
 

Young dramatic soprano Marcy Stonikas was a Filene Young Artist at Wolf Trap Opera Company this summer singing the roles of Rosaura in Wolf-Ferrari’s rarely performed Le donne curiose and Antonia in Les Contes d’Hoffmann (Offenbach).  She recently made her Seattle Opera mainstage debut as Second Lady in Magic Flute (Mozart).  Other recent roles include: the title roles in Ariadne auf Naxos (R. Strauss), Vanessa (Barber) and Suor Angelica (Puccini); Donna Anna, Don Giovanni (Mozart); Fiordiligi, Così fan tutte (Mozart); Governess, The Turn of the Screw (Britten); Amelia, Amelia al Ballo (Menotti); La voce dal cielo in Don Carlo (Verdi), Blumenmädchen in Parsifal (Wagner) with the Cleveland Orchestra conducted by Pierre Boulez; Tosca (Puccini) with The Cleveland Opera on Tour; Marenka, The Bartered Bride (Smetana); Giorgetta, Il Tabarro (Puccini); Bubikopf in Der Kaiser von Atlantis (Ullmann) and Skookum 1 in Coyote Tales (Mollicone). Ms. Stonikas is a regular guest performer with the International Contemporary Ensemble (I.C.E.) and has performed on “Live from WFMT” as well as a “Live from Pianoforte Chicago: The Fazioli Studio Series” concert also hosted by WFMT. Ms. Stonikas’ concert repertoire includes such works as the Mahler’s 2nd Symphony, Verdi’s Requiem, Mozart’s C minor Mass, Brahms’ Eine Deutches Requiem, Dvorak’s Te Deum, Saint-Saëns’ Christmas Oratorio and she was a concerto competition winner at both Oberlin and CCPA with Barber’s Andromache’s Farewell.  Ms. Stonikas won the 2009 Elgin Opera Vocal Competition, was one of the 2006 International Meistersinger Competition winners and the 2006 Chicago Chapter N.A.T.S. Competition.  She performed the roles of Irene/Mary in the American premiere of Jerry Springer - the Opera (Thomas) at the Bailiwick Repertory Theatre in Chicago.  She is a graduate of Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of Performing Arts (CCPA) and Oberlin College Conservatory of Music.  In 2008-2009, Ms. Stonikas was selected to work as an Apprentice Artist with Sarasota Opera and while there, she was the recipient of the Richard F. Gold Career Grant from the Shoshana Foundation.  In 2009-2010, following her first season as a Young Aritst with Seattle Opera, Ms. Stonikas covered  Jane Eaglen in the world premiere of Amelia (Hagen) with Seattle Opera and performed as Gretchen/Una poenitentium in Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 with Oak Park River Forest Symphony at Chicago’s Symphony Hall.  In 2010-2011, she made a return to Seattle Opera’s Young Artist Program.  In addition, she also made her debut performance with the Seattle Symphony as the soprano soloist in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9.  This season, Ms. Stonikas can be seen singing with the Oak Park River Forest Symphony once again - this time in Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis.  In the 2012-13 season, she can be seen making returns to both Wolf Trap Opera and Seattle Opera.
