Pirates Of The Caribbean Review
3/11/07 | Michael Loder (Loads)

Arg…me hearties yo ho ho and a bottle of cr#p?

For years now we have seen many movies become games and many characters become playable, mainly of which have come from Disney. Again Pirates Of the Caribbean At Worlds End is no exception, like the movie it is the final instalment in a trilogy of three games however all of those games have never passed the 5/10 mark in the ratings. Pirates of the Caribbean At Worlds End, was an Ok film that has been translated into a mediocre game with the same jokes and stale characteristics as the movie. That’s not to say that the previous movies are bad Pirates of the Caribbean Curse of the Black Pearl, was a great film because of the breath of fresh air it is (we hadn’t seen anything like it). But the next two films were used as a way to obtain large sums of money from fans around the world. Anyway to the game, it’s one of those games where they hire the best impersonators and use the best video effects to make it look and sound just like the movies however this doesn’t always work, the creators don’t always take into account how it will play when burned to a disk.

The game starts at the beginning of Pirates of the Caribbean Dead mans chest, it starts you off as Jack Sparrow the scurvy pirate legend who has been taken prisoner on a large creepy looking island prison, you must complete the tutorial, that includes fighting a few bad guys, climbing a few cliffs and learning to shoot your flintlock pistol. The level is slow and dull with the fights involving a one button combat system that fails to excite. Throughout the game you are faced with mini duels that are reasonably dull and somewhat stupid looking. You are given a side on view (that of a fighting game) with three circles on screen, you and your foe take turns in bashing at one another with your cutlasses keeping an eye on the little circles on screen and tapping the button that corresponds with the ones that appear in those circles in order to attack and defend. This becomes a somewhat tedious and boring task when your going at it for 10 mins. In Pirates 3, you are offered to play as a variety of characters from Jack Sparrow to Will Turner and a good few more that is one of the finer points in the game however character changing happens during the level when you hit a button in order to change. The idea behind this is that you must keep all the characters alive. Looking after 3 at once can be a somewhat difficult task and making matters worse is that once a character is lost you must start the mission again from last save.

This can create a real annoyance when you are attempting to complete a task and your ill powered A.I. comrades keep dieing before you can complete said task. Another let down was the fact that the only thing that sets the characters apart is the look, each character be it Will or Elizabeth doesn’t in fact do anything different there aren’t any stats in the game making a fairley generic 3rd person pirate game with no upgrades or anything to make the game interesting. The only thing you really have to do is collect the various pirate collectables that have been lain around the levels in order to get the best score on each level.

The length of the game is decent (about 8 to 10 hours) but it doesn’t hold your attention nearly long enough for you to accomplish anything. The multiplayer shouldn’t even be mentioned but I have a duty to provide all the infomation I have so, the 2 player multiplayer offers you and one friend to make use of the duelling aspect of the game, there is also a co-op challenge that you and a friend can attempt this is only special parts of levels that are especially designed for multiplayer so I guess if you have a friend willing to sit with you and be bored then that’s worth doing.

The characters and levels look and feal is all emulated from the movie nearly perfectly they both look and sound great, when you see Jack Sparrow you know its Jack Sparrow not only by the way he sounds but by the way he moves as it has all been captured by advanced CGI technology making use of a guy walking around in a suit with little balls all over it (looks and sounds funny). The actors from the film don’t do the voice acting in the game unfortunately but is done by reasonably close sounding impersonators; this is disappointing to us great fans that can tell. The soundtrack wasn’t composed or taken from the movie but has the same triumphant and epic pirate feel to it. Unfortunately the great looking and great sounding qualities this game possesses aren’t enough to make up for dull and sterile game play. The game lacks that feeling we got when we first saw jack enter port royal in the first film, it just feels empty and nothing short of terrible and that’s not right considering the nature of the films.

All in All

Sound:

(Sounds like the movie, making you feel like you were there)

Story:

(As confusing as the film just not nearly as good)

Graphics:

(Beautiful looking environments and great character emulations)

Gameplay:

(Boring and dull )

OVERALL:

(A nice idea executed real badly it’s a nice looking and nice sounding game that leaves you with a nice does of buyers remorse)
