Metal Slug Review
1/11/07 | Michael Loder (Loads)

You Don't have to Insert Coins This Time Around

The latest and possibly greatest game from the Metal Slug series comes Metal Slug Anthology. That’s right as the name suggests it is the Anthology…of all the games in SNK’s awesome “run and gun” Saga, all on the one disk!. Now if you have ever played any of the Metal Slug games you will know the basics of the game itself and you will also know how fun it can be and how addictive it can be. I’m sure there are many of you (like myself) who spent many dollar coins on this baby in the arcades before it was released in homes on the Sega Saturn in 1996. But now SNK continue to share with us those great memories from the comfort of our own homes With Metal Slug Anthology, the game includes all seven of the Metal Slug games made thus far Metal Slug, Metal Slug 2, Metal Slug X, Metal Slug 3, Metal slug 4 and all the way up till the seventh instalment. Now these games as far as design and game play go are the same thing that we’ve seen before that being said can be a good thing if your looking to relive those days mashing those big colour buttons and watching those funny little characters jump around on screen firing bullets in all directions.

Nintendo has done well with the Wii remote controller in this little arcade classic. With the controller held sideways and used as a simple NES replica, with that said you can also change how you play either making use of the nun chuck attachment combined with the Wii remote or make the nun chuck your main means of control, oh the possibilities are endless… however holding the Wii remote control side on can lead to an effective way to play this arcade classic.

Oh and they have also made (if only slight) use of the motion censor by making the way we throw grenades a little innovative by a quick shake of the Wii remote away from you this making you look a little stupid (as most Wii games do) when you all of a sudden start jutting around on the couch attempting to take out the little 16 bit tanks on screen.

The length of the game depends on the individual title each title has approximately 6 to 8 missions to complete that in which you are confronted with a few different types of enemy things like your standard Nazi solder, Zombies (that when attacked you become one), Mummies (that you are turned into on attack) and Arabs make a small appearance. What makes this game interesting is, as I mentioned certain enemies could effect how you play the game, the zombie makes you walk slower and look …sort of cool and instead of a grenade you belch a huge spray of blood across the screen killing all enemies on screen (that are soon replaced). It’s a lot of the smaller things about this game that makes it a really quirky experience at times. The ability of riding in several different vehicles things like Tanks, Planes, Submarines and even elephant back all of these unleashing insane amounts of fire power on your enemies.

The game itself is a fun on your own for about half an hour, but with a friend you should (if you enjoyed the game in past years) be able to have hours of fun stealing the better weapons out from under them and attempting to best each others scores which almost always hit over the 100,000’s thanks to the amount of fire power you’re a blessed with throughout the game. Ok so in conclusion people who would buy this game are those of us who still enjoy that little feeling we get from playing something a little familiar that we haven’t seen in a years, this will defiantly give you that feeling, again it’s a tad stale in one player and can be gotten over very quickly but get a friend round and a few drinks and you can enjoy hours of fun. But if your looking for something with cutting edge graphics, a soundtrack that will stun and epic game play this isn’t the game for you this is far more of your chill out and relax game that wont strain your brain to the extend of headache (however the flashing graphics and sound effects might!)

All in All

Sound:

(average stuff nothing to new or exiting)

Story:

(there’s a story??)

Graphics:

(a nice use of 16 bit technology)

Game Play:

(Somewhat repetitive and stale on your own)

OVERALL:

(a good game that reminds us how far we have come, good and light fun)
