FRIENDS OF THE BLACK NEW WORLD

Become a Friend of The Black New World
Located in The Village Bottoms Cultural District of West Oakland, California, The Black New World Social Aid & Pleasure Club is a non-profit membership club organized to advance the art, music, culture, spirituality, folkways and neighborhoods of Black people. While it is our primary mission to promote and advance the cultural and economic well-being of Black people living in under-served, low-income, predominantly Black neighborhoods, we welcome people of all nationalities, ethnicities and income brackets to become our friends. And friendship definitely has it’s privileges. It gives you access to all of The Black New World’s ‘friends-only’ events, which includes intimate presentations and performances by some of today’s leading artists, musicians and thinkers.

To date, The Black New World has presented the legendary poet/playwright/activist Amiri Baraka, revolutionary artist Emory Douglas (former BPP Minister of Culture), poet Umar Bin Hassan (The Last Poets), jazz vocalist Dwight Trible, trumpeter Eddie Gale, saxophonists Prince LaShae and David Murray, New Orleans Brass Bands Rebirth & The Hot Eight, master drummer Kahil El Zabar and the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble. Poet/Playwright Ntozake Shange (For Colored Girls), POCC Chairman Fred Hampton Jr., activist Yuri Kochiyama, Academy award nominated actor Don Cheadle, and a host of local treasures and cultural ambassadors that you rarely experience under one roof. As a friend you can enjoy both public and private events such as these and much more.

By becoming a friend and pledging at least a small $10 a month reoccurring donation or a $100 a year donation you also strengthen the community development work of the Black New World Social Aid & Pleasure Club’s non-profit umbrella organization Black Dot Artists, Inc. Founded 14 years ago by Marcel Diallo, Black Dot has been leading the grassroots effort to revitalize Oakland’s oldest neighborhood with the creation of a Black Cultural District affectionately called The Village Bottoms. To date, Black Dot has assisted in the establishment of at least ten culturally specific businesses in the Village Bottoms including The Black New World, The Black Dot Cafe, Soul Foods Cooperative, Village Bottoms Farm and Cornelia Bell’s Black Bottom Gallery. We have also assisted over 100 Black artists, cultural workers and entrepreneurs locate real estate in West Oakland. With your continued and increased friendship we will continue to advance the cultural and economic development of this long neglected neighborhood. To become a friend click here.

We understand that many of you who are more familiar with the work of Black Dot/Village Bottoms/Black New World feel that giving just $10 a month is truly not enough to support all that we do in the community, so we want you to feel free to give as much as you desire to give. You can enter whatever amount you wish! To us, the amount of $10 a month is a lowest common denominator, we believe it is an amount that the majority of people in our community can give monthly without thinking too hard about it, but if say, for instance you want to give $50 or $100 a month, this helps us reach our immediate short term goal of $10,000 a month in reoccurring donations that much faster.

The Black New World Social Aid & Pleasure Club is on a mission to increase our monthly donor based to one-thousand friends giving at least $10 dollars a month by February 2010. To achieve this goal we need all of you, once you’ve become a friend, to help enroll new friends. One-thousand friends is a magic number for us. It’s a number that can sustain The Black New World culturally, economically and politically. And in a world where the private interests of a few money rich and well connected families pretty much rule the day, it is of extreme importance that those of us who find ourselves on the opposite end of this spectrum ( i.e., poor, broke & starving to death), get connected with each other, pool our pennies and realize that together we have the collective people power, community wealth and ability to create a New World. Lofty notions such as the Change We Can Believe In that Obama speaks about today, down to the All Power To The People concept that the Black Panthers once promoted during the turbulent 60s in this very neighborhood can be realized through the simple mindful actions of individuals like you. Simply become a friend and tell a friend, and let the creation of a New World begin!
