Politics

I’ve had the good fortune to have my politics overlap with my work a couple of times. This piece is the veterans tribute that aired at the 2008 Democratic National Convention. It was directed by Steven Spielberg, produced by James Moll, Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen, narrated by Tom Hanks and scored by John Williams. The whole experience was a huge treat and I felt lucky to be involved.
But the best part was that I got to honor my father, who had died just four months earlier. There’s a picture of him and his Korean War buddies right at the three and a half minute mark. Seeing that image with Williams’ score gets me every time.
I’ve posted the whole seven minute piece, just for the heck of it.
During the 2004 Democratic Convention, this film was shown to introduce the country to candidate John Kerry.
Virtually every Vietnam shot came from Kerry’s own super-8 movies. Whatever you think about him as a politician, the guy definitely had an eye for great shots.
