US Nationals, Dunlap, CA 2009 Task 6
Task: 49917 2k exit, Wolverine 3k, Woodlake 2k ess, Woodlake. 40km???
As shown in the photo above, launch was completely socked in for several hours this morning. We took a tour of the monastery where we’re staying, went up to launch late, hung out debating whether to have a task or not, and when we could finally see the valley floor, they called a task. Start time was around 3:40 pm, with Woodlake as the goal. Many unhappy competitors, already satisfied with a perfectly valid meet and nursing hangovers from last night’s party launched themselves into the abyss to try their luck.
Some pilots went down the ridge into the cylinder, others stayed out in the valley where there was more sun. The valley turned out to be the unlucky choice, and most pilots that attempted the valley crossing went down. I was in that group.
The terrain group just made the crossing to Bald and were seen climbing there. The SPOT page currently indicates that there are several pilots very close to goal in Woodlake.
