Peacefire, is the first feature from writer/director Macdara Vallely. It stars John Travers, and was shot entirely on location in Craigavon, Co. Armagh in the north of Ireland in the summer of 2007.
Set against the backdrop of the Northern Ireland Peace Process, the film is an account of one young man's experience of crime and punishment on his local housing estate.
John Travers stars as Colin, a joyriding hood who couldn't give a toss about the political situation. But a chance encounter with a ruthless detective (Gerry Doherty) turns him into an informer for the so-called forces of law and order and a target for retribution for his father's old mates in the IRA.
In the violent upheaval that follows, Colin must struggle with the intense loyalty he feels for his mates; the need to protect his mother from her tragic past; and the political ideals of a dead father.
Vallely says that as a writer and director of plays and short films, he had always shied away from stories about the troubles. “Stories about the conflict, used to send me running for the door,” he said. “That’s not to say there aren’t some great films about the subject.
