The 6th grade mixed media classes made their own surreal collages after learning about surrealism and the artist Rene Magritte.  Magritte was a master at putting ordinary objects together in very unordinary ways.  See Time Transfixed by clicking here.  This was the project that led us into using Photoshop Elements as a tool for manipulating and combining parts of digital images.
