4th Grade Storytellers
The first Native American storyteller figures were created by Helen Cordero of the Cochiti Pueblo (New Mexico) in 1963.  Helen Cordero intended the storyteller to be a likeness of her grandfather, therefore she originally made only male storyteller figurines.  She cherished the role of the storytellers (like her grandfather) in preserving the history of the Pueblo Indians.  Most Native American potters today however, make female figurines or even animals.

After viewing many images of Storytellers created by Native American artists, the 4th grade students put their own creative spin on the storyteller concept and created their own!
