South Seminar program overview
Socratic seminar is a method of learning that supports teaching and learning through discussion. This program is for you if:
•You always prepare for class by reading and thinking about the class content;
•Enjoy learning about the views of your classmates;
•Like to help teach others through your own understanding of text;
•Are comfortable speaking up in class and sharing your thoughts and opinions.
You will teach, learn, and be graded based on your participation in discussion of original texts, not condensed material in textbooks. Your discussion skills will be enhanced and supported through the use of technology, more specifically, social networking software and sites like education oriented blogs, wikis, podcasts, and movies. Your grades will be based on discussion, writing assignments, and projects.
No prior level of experience in discussion and technology is required to enter the South seminar program, only a willingness to learn, share, and keep up with the level of work. The pacing will be fast, but you will learn the content in depth. Our intent is to help you prepare for the rigor of AP or regular classes, using the skills you developed in seminar to help you become a better learner and thinker.
