Burt came to me with two other young agoutis via a rescue operation. I was only meant to be fostering the three boys and had no intention of keeping any of them but Burt had other ideas.
Although initially scared of being handled he quickly learned to trust humans and made it his mission to worm his way into my heart.
What swung it was the morning that I looked in on the boys and he just looked up at me and started bruxing and boggling like mad. I reached in the cage to give him some scritches and he then started to lick and groom my fingers. What was I supposed to do when faced with that?
Burt is named after two other agouti bucks I used to own, the name is a joke as I acquired the original Burt from an acquaintance who didn’t like him as he was a “big ugly rat thing”. I actually think that agoutis are some of the prettiest of all rat varieties.
Burt went to the vets on the 16th of August to be neutered. Sadly he never awoke from the anaesthetic. He will be sorely missed.
