Democracy Now! reports: “ ...up to 400 people were arrested in a protest near the State Capitol, about a mile from the convention site. Police used tear-gas and flash grenades against the crowd. Overall, more than 800 people have been arrested at anti-RNC protests in the Twin Cities this week. Nineteen media workers have also been jailed.
These events prompted me to take a look at “UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights” ( http://www.un.org/Overview/rights.html ), signed also among other countries, by USA on December 10, 1948. Reading of the Declaration is quite shocking- for 30 articles only 3 are not violated by US Government. Read it for yourself and draw your own conclusions.

AMY GOODMAN: On Wednesday, prosecutors formally charged eight members of the RNC Welcoming Committee with conspiracy to riot in furtherance of terrorism. The eight activists are believed to be the first people ever charged under the 2002 Minnesota version of the federal PATRIOT Act. The activists face up to seven-and-a-half years in prison.
On Thursday, other members of the RNC Welcoming Committee spoke to the media for the first time. The group, along with the Poor People’s Economic Human Rights Campaign, held a news conference at their convergence space to discuss their group and the charges against the so-called RNC Eight.

• WILLIAM GILLIS: My name is William Gillis. That’s William G-I-L-L-I-S. I’ve been organizing with the Welcoming Committee for the last two years. And I am, in fact, an anarchist. I believe the government is organized crime. I want to see a world of anarchy without domination, without thugs, without warlords, without tyrants and without politicians. And as an American, I believe in actively resisting those who would rule us all.
• The brutality and the lies of the state this week are not a surprise, but they are still deplorable. Police kicked down doors with guns drawn on families with their children at dinnertime. Reporters and the media at large have been repeatedly target for repression. Activists have been abducted off the street in unmarked vans and political prisoners held without access to medical attention.
• The state has never really bothered with ethical justifications for its violence. But now we see that the agents of the law don’t even bother with internal consistency, ignoring the few rights they have pledged not to violate. Sheriff Bob Fletcher has unleashed a degree of repression that should embarrass and anger us all.

The BBC is reporting two Polish intelligence sources have for the first time confirmed that the CIA ran a secret prison facility on Polish soil. Tyranny on Display at the Republican Convention

St. Paul is a window into our future. It is a future where, as one protester told me by phone, "people have been pepper-gassed, thrown on the ground by police who had drawn their weapons, had their documents seized and their tattoos photographed before being taken away to jail." It is a future where illegal house raids are carried out. It is a future where vans containing heavily armed paramilitary units circle and film protesters. It is a future where, as the protester said, "people have been pulled from cars because their license plates were on a database and handcuffed, thrown in the back of a squad car and then watched as their vehicles were ransacked and their personal possessions from computers to literature seized." It is a future where constitutional rights mean nothing and where lawful dissent is branded a form of terrorism.
The rise of the corporate state means the rise of the surveillance state. The Janus-like face of America swings from packaged and canned spectacles, from nationalist slogans, from seas of flags and Christian crosses, from professions of faith and patriotism, to widespread surveillance, illegal mass detentions, informants, provocateurs and crude acts of repression and violence. We barrel toward a world filled with stupendous lies and blood.
What difference is there between the crowds of flag-waving Republicans and the apparatchiks I covered as a reporter in the old East German Communist Party? These Republican delegates, like the fat and compromised party functionaries in East Berlin, all fawned on cue over an inept and corrupt party hierarchy. They all purported to champion workers' rights and freedom while they systematically fleeced, disempowered and impoverished the workers they lauded. They all celebrated the virtue of a state that was morally bankrupt. And while they played this con game, one that gave them special privileges, power and wealth, they unleashed their goons and thugs on all who dared to challenge them. We are not East Germany, but we are well on our way. An economic meltdown, another catastrophic terrorist attack on American soil, a war with Iran, and we could easily swing into an authoritarian model that would look very familiar to anyone who lived in the former communist East bloc. read more: TruthDig.com

Zinn: US 'In Need of Rebellion'
Al Jazeera speaks to Howard Zinn, the author, American historian, social critic and activist, about how the Iraq war damaged attitudes towards the US and why the US "empire" is close to collapse.
Q: Where is the United States heading in terms of world power and influence?

Howard Zinn is the author of, most notably, A People's History of the United States, a National-Book-Award-nominated text that investigates US history from the standpoint of the oppressed. Other books by Zinn include Declarations of Independence: Cross-Examining American Ideology and his 1995 autobiography, You Can't be Neutral on a Moving Train.
HZ: America has been heading - for some time, and is heading right now - toward less and less world power, less and less influence.
Obviously, since the war in Iraq, the rest of the world has fallen away from the United States, and if American foreign policy continues in the way it has been - that is aggressive and violent and uncaring about the feelings and thoughts of other people - then the influence of the United States is going to decline more and more.
This is an empire which is on the one hand the most powerful empire that ever existed; on the other hand an empire that is crumbling - an empire that has no future ... because the rest of the world is alienated and simply because this empire is top-heavy with military commitments, with bases around the world, with the exhaustion of its own resources at home.
[This is] leading to more and more discontent and home, so I think the American empire will go the way of other empires and I think it is on its way now.
Q: Is there any hope the US will change its approach to the rest of the world?
HZ: If there is any hope, the hope lies in the American people.
[It] lies in American people becoming resentful enough and indignant enough over what has happened to their country, over the loss of dignity in the world, over the starving of human resources in the United States, the starving of education and health, the takeover of the political mechanism by corporate power and the result this has on the everyday lives of the American people.
[There is also] the higher and higher food prices, the more and more insecurity, the sending of the young people to war.
I think all of this may very well build up into a movement of rebellion.
We have seen movements of rebellion in the past: The labour movement, the civil rights movement, the movement against the war in Vietnam.
I think we may well see, if the United States keeps heading in the same direction, a new popular movement. That is the only hope for the United States.

Amerykański system obrony antybalistycznej to magiczny budyń, którego nigdy nie ubywa.
Jest to osobliwy sposób na odebranie sobie życia. W tym samym czasie, gdy Rosja demonstruje, co moze sie stać z byłym slugą, który ją irytuje, Polska zgadza sie na umieszczenie na swoich terenach amerykanskiej antyrakietowej bazy wojskowej.
Rosjanie, czego sie mozna bylo spodziewac, reagują na to posuniecie groźbą zamiany Polski w parking. Takie oswiadczenia przekonują, że obronny system rakietowy jest, pomimo wszystko konieczny , gdyż zatrzyma rakiety, które teraz beda skierowane na Polske, Czechy, i Wielka Brytanię, w odpowiedzi na ich uczestnictwo w defensywnym systemie.
Rząd amerykanski twierdzi, ze przechwytujące rakiety, które beda zainstalowane w bałtyckiej strefie nadmorskiej, nie mają nic wspólnego z Rosją; ich zadaniem jest obrona Europy i USA przed międzykontynentalnymi balistycznymi pociskami, które Iran i Polnocna Korea nie posiada. To jest wlasnie powodem, dla którego sa one instalowane w Polsce, która z kolei, o czym wie każdy student geografii z Texasu, graniczy z obu bandyckimi krajami.
Przechwytujące rakiety pozwalaja nam patrzeć w promienną przyszlosć, gdzie obrona przeciwrakietowa, zdaniem Pentagonu, będzie “bronila naszej ojczyzny … i naszych przyjaciól przed atakiem balistycznych rakiet.”(1) Oczywiscie, będzie bronila dopóty, dopóki nas Rosjanie nie poczęstuja atomem. Dobrą wiadomoscią jest to, że przy obecnym tempie zaawansowania technologicznego, mamy co najmniej 50 lat, zanim system zacznie funkcjonować. Zla wiadomosc to fakt, że mówi sie o tych 50 latach przez ostatnie 6 dekad.
System jest w fazie rozwoju od 1946 roku i jak na razie jest totalnym niepowodzeniem. Nie dowiedziałbyś się tego jednak, czytając oswiadczenie prasowe Pentagonu: słowo “sukces” pojawia sie w nim czesciej niż każdy inny rzeczownik(2). Prawdą jest, że na pięc wystrzelonych rakiet, dwie zostają strącone (jak wykazuja testy(3) systemu GDM z ostatnich pięciu lat). Niestety, testy te niewiele mają wspólnego z realiami ataku nuklearnego.
Rezultaty prób systemu, zarówno te udane jak i nie, zostały sfałszowane. Cel, jego typ, tor lotu sa znane zanim test sie rozpocznie. Tylko jedna atakująca rakieta balistyczna nieprzyjaciela została użyta w testach, jako że nie ma najmniejszej nadziei, że dwie lub więcej rakiet może byc strąconych. Nieprzyjacielskie rakiety sa odgórnie zakwalifikowane jako nieprzyjacielskie. Ażeby zwiększyc prawdopodobieństwo sukcesu, agencja przestała ostatnio używac w swoich testach nieprzyjacielskich atrap.
Fakt ten wskazuje na niełatwa do rozwiazania słabosc systemu balistycznego; trudno mieć nadzieję, że rakiety przechwytujące mogłyby kiedykolwiek przechytrzyc dezorientujące manewry wroga. Były przedstawiciel Pentagonu odpowiedzialny za obronę antybalistyczną, Philip Coyle, zauważyl, że wrogie kraje mają do dyspozycji nieograniczone sposoby oglupienia systemu(4). Na każdą autentyczną rakietę moga wystrzelić mnóstwo atrap o tym samym dla radaru i dla promieni podczerwonych wyglądzie. Nawet balony, czy też kawalki folii sa w stanie obezwładnic obecny system. Można też zredukować laserową wykrywalność atakujących rakiet o 90% poprzez pomalowanie ich na biało(5). Taka wyrafinowana technologia maskująca, dostępna w twoim lokalnym sklepie z farbami, potrafi zdezaktualizować następny wielomiliardowy element systemu. Alternatywnie, można tez kompletnie pominąc rakiety balistyczne w ataku i wybrac samoloty-pociski, przeciwko którym system obrony jest bezużyteczny.
Obrona antybalistyczna jest tak niezwykle droga, a sposoby jej unikniecia tak tanie, że jesli rzad USA chciałby na serio/na poważnie uczynic system sprawnym, kraj musiałby zbankrutować (podobnie jak wyscig zbrojeń przyczynił się do upadku Związku Radzieckiego). Wydając kilka milionów na nowoczesne technologie atrap, Rosja zmusi Stany Zjednoczone do wydania trylionów w kontrreakcji. Proporcja kosztów pozwoliłaby nawet Iranowi doprowadzic USA do ruiny.
Od momentu kiedy Ronald Regan wznowił program obrony antybalistycznej (znany także z nazwy “Wojny gwiezdne”) w 1983 roku, Stany Zjednoczone wydały na niego około 120 - 150 miliardów $. Za rzadów Georga Busha koszty się zwiększyły. Pentagon wystąpił z prosbą o $62 miliardy na następne pięć lat, co oznacza ze całkowity koszt w latach 2003 i 2013 bedzie wynosil 110 miliardów $. Pomimo kosztów, do tej pory nie istnieją klarowne kryteria sukcesu. Jak pokazal ostatnio opublicowany dokument “Analiza Obrony i Bezpieczeństwa”, Pentagon wynalazł nową metodę finansowania, po to, aby pozwolic systemowi obrony antybalistycznej uniknąc normalnej procedury państwowego systemu rozliczania finansowego. Metoda to nazywa sie teraz rozwojem spiralnym, bardzo stosownie, gdyż gwarantuje ze koszty wymkną sie z jakiejkolwiek kontroli.
Spiralny rozwój oznacza, aby użyc słow wytycznej Pentagonu, że “wymogi koncowego stadium nie są znane w momencie inicjacji programu”. Zamiast tego pozwala się, aby system rozwijal sie w sposób odpowiadający życzeniom przedstawicieli rządowych. W rezultacie nikt nie ma najmniejszego pojęcia, co program powinien osiągnac, albo czy też już osiągnął swój cel, czy też nie. Nie ma w nim ustalonych dat, wyznaczonych kosztów komponentow systemu, nie ma kar za niepowodzenia czy potyczki, nie ma żadnych standardów, według których system mógłby byc oceniony. I cały ten monstrualny spisek nadal nie jest w stanie osiagnąc tego, co popołudniowa dyplomacja może dokonac za cenę kilkuset dolarów.
Dlaczego więc przeznaczać niekończące sie miliardy na program, który skazany jest na niepowodzenie? Podpowiem wam - prawidłowa odpowiedź zawarta jest w pytaniu. Program trwa, bo nie działa.
Polityka Stanów Zjednoczonych (ze względu na brak reformy systemu wyborczego, co jest obopólną winą zarowno demokratów jak i republikanów) jest zgnila od stóp do głowy. Zwłaszcza za rządow Busha korupcja nabrała wymiarów nigeryjskich. Rzad Federalny stał się ogromną instytucją opiekunczą dla korporacji i wynagradza milionowe donacje od firm miliardowymi kontraktami.
System obrony antybalistycznej jest więc tego typu prezentem, magicznym budyniem, którego nigdy nie ubywa, bez względu na to, ile go zjesz. Fundusze skierowane na obronę, lotnictwo i inne produkcyjne czy usługowe firmy nigdy nie wyschną, ponieważ system nigdy nie będzie działał.
Ażeby budyń się lał bez przerwy, administracja musi wyolbrzymiać zagrożenie ze strony krajow, które nie mają możliwosci użycia broni atomowej, i ignorować prawdopodobieństwo reakcji ze strony krajów, które nią dysponują. Rosja, oczywiście, nie pozostaje w tyle ze swoją korupcją. W zeszlym tygodniu można bylo popatrzeć sobie na budzące obawy zadowolenie rosyjskich generałow i panstwowych urzędnikow od spraw obrony, którzy znaleźli w obecnym obrocie sprawy pretekst do zwiększenia swojego znaczenia i wysunięcia roszczeń o większy budżet militarny. Biedna stara Polska, podobnie jak Czechy i Anglia, zostały docisnięte i sprowadzone do roli amerykańskiego wabia.
Jeśli chcielibyśmy ocenic politykę zagraniczną Stanow Zjednoczonych w kategoriach racjonalnego zaangażowania w problemy międzynarodowe, albo nawet jako efektywny sposób narzucania siły, to tylko zblądzimy. Zainteresowanie rzadu USA koncentrowało się zawsze na sprawach wewnętrznych. Rząd stara sie zadowolić lobbystow, zmienia zdanie opinii publicznej w krytycznym momencie politycznego cyklu, przystosowuje dla swojej korzyści szalone fantazje chrześcian i jest stręczycielem dla firm telewizyjnych bedących w rękach ekscentrycznych miliarderów. USA nie ma jako takiej zagranicznej polisy. Ma natomiast cały szereg wewnętrznych, krajowych polis, ktore sa narzucane krajom zewnętrznym. Fakt ze zagrazają one światu 57 wariacjami zniszczenia nie jest przedmiotem troski obecnej administracji. Jedyne pytanie budzące zainteresowanie brzmi: kto zostanie przepłacony i jaka polityczna korzysc z tego wyniknie.
