Ensembles, Bands and Classes

Why Ensembles?

Playing music with others is fun! Come join one of our ensembles to experience the joy of making music with others and performing for an audience.

BMS believes strongly that playing (and singing) with others is an essential part of learning and enjoying music. We provide ensembles for musicians of various levels of ability and different musical tastes.  All ensembles meet for 10-week sessions.   At the end of each session, the group hosts a concert - watch our bulletin board for dates and times!

Our ensemble coaches are experienced professionals who share their passion for playing and performing.

Classical Guitar Ensemble

Join a classical guitar ensemble and make beautiful music with others.  We have opportunities for adults and youth to play in a group setting.

“Nothing is more beautiful than a guitar, save perhaps two.” Fredric Chopin ("Or 3 or 4." Steve Shurack)

Jazz Ensembles

Our jazz combos swing!  We have have jazz groups for all ages and many levels of ability.  Keep the tradition alive, jazz is born in America, appreciated worldwide.  Jazz is about freedom of expression and musical communication.  Gain experience by joining the (musical) conversation.

Rock Bands

Our rock bands encourage, engage, and showcase the musical, artistic and individual talents of participants. This is your chance to join a group with others of similar abilities and experience and play with a band.  Members learn songs, and how to rehearse and perform.  Groups meet once a week for 90 minutes.

Jazz Guitar Reading Ensemble

Guitar players are too often illiterate!  Time to get it together like every other instrument player does.  Guitarists need to be able to read well to learn faster and to be able play with others in ensembles.  The best way to improve reading skills is in an ensemble, this class will help develop your music reading ability and improvising while keeping your place in the music.

Ear Training and Theory

Join Colin Thurmond, instructor of Music Theory and Aural Skill from the Lamont School of Music, for a course to take your musicianship to the next level. Colin will be teaching a college level class at Broadway Music School for anyone who wants to benefit from increasing their listening skills.

Music theory distills and analyzes the elements of music – rhythm, harmony (harmonic function), melody, structure, form, and texture.

This course is designed to:

  1. Improve your knowledge of structure and form of music

  2. Help shape interpretation

  3. Help you recognize and identify the sounds you hear in music

  4. Understand composers intentions

  5. Help you learn music faster
