Gene Bertoncini is one of the pre-eminent jazz guitarists active today. His fluid technique and lyricism have won him international praise and accolades as the "Segovia of jazz." An eloquent and versatile improviser, Mr. Bertoncini has been heard with an extraordinary range of jazz greats, including performances and recordings with Benny Goodman, Buddy Rich, Wayne Shorter, Hubert Laws, Paul Desmond among others, as well as such distinguished singers as Tony Bennett, Lena Horne, Nancy Wilson, Vic Damone, and Eydie Gorme.
The Washington Post proclaimed his solo appearance in New York City the best jazz concert of the year 1999. Mr Bertoncini's acclaim is hardly confined to this country. His CD, "Someone to Light Up My Life" which features his own arrangements of the compositions of the great bossa nova composer Antonio Carlos Jobim, won international raves. Brazilian critic's and listener's polls also named him the best acoustic jazz guitarist. In 2005, Gene released a striking solo CD, "Quiet Now" on the heels of his highly successful "Acoustic Romance," which reached the top ten of the jazz playlists. Jazziz magazine's March 2004 issue ranked it Number 1 in their list of the top 20 acoustic guitar CDs. "Concerti" the 2009 Super Audio CD release, features Gene Bertoncini on nylon string guitar teamed up with a String Quartet and special guest David Finck on acoustic bass.
A prolific and popular studio musician, Bertoncini honed his professional chops as a member of the Tonight Show band during Johnny Carson's tenure, and he has worked with composers and arrangers such as Lalo Schifrin and Michael Legrand and has performed with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra.
In addition to an active performing and recording schedule, Gene teaches at the Eastman School of Music and William Patterson University. A New York City native, he graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in architecture. According to the New Yorker magazine, "Bertoncini is an affecting, highly original guitarist who moves easily back and forth between classical and jazz guitar."
Gene Bertoncini
the “segovia of jazz”
A native of Carbondale, Pennsylvania, guitarist, composer, arranger and educator Dale Bruning is a master of jazz guitar. The music that comes out of his guitar is purely his own. He copies no one but his playing is like a compendium of Jazz guitar technique.
During the 1940s and 1950s, Dale spent time living, working and recording in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. In the United States Navy from 1953-57, he was a guitarist and arranger, and when called upon, also played piano, bass, vibes and percussion. Upon his release in 1957, he studied at Temple University, a psychology major but a musician at heart, taking as many music classes as he could and studying with world renowned music educator Dennis Sandole.
In 1961, Mr. Bruning became the leader of the house band for The Del Shields Show, a television variety program that originated from Philadelphia on WRCV, an NBC affiliate. In 1964, he and his family moved to Denver, where he still maintains his teaching practice, in between preparations for concerts and recording. His prowess as a performer is equaled by his talent in composing, arranging and teaching.
During his more than 45 years of private teaching, many of his students (numbering over 1,000!) have gone on to become professional musicians, including Bill Frisell, Mark Patterson, Bob Gillis, Tim O'Brian, Pat Donohue, and Mark Simon.
In 1996, he and his business partner, writer/concert & CD producer Jude Hibler, began their Jazz Link Enterprises CD label. Under that label,, they have cop-produced numerous recordings, solo, duet, and quartet, with the likes of New York bassist Michael Moore, alto-saxman Rich Chiarluce, guitarists Bill Frisell and Mark Simon and others.
